Marvel Delves Into The Cupboard And Brings Back Runaways

Marvel Comics is giving us our first look at their new series Runaways by writer Rainbow Rowell and artist Kris Anka.

Runaways tells the story of a group of teenagers who come across each other through their wealthy parents’ annual business meeting. However, during the meeting they discover a sickening truth, their parents are secretly super villains!

Picking off from the previous series the Runaways find themselves scattered across the Marvel Universe and their parents now gone.

“The Runaways are down on their luck at the beginning of this story,” said series writer Rainbow Rowell. “I mean, a fair number of them are missing or dead… And the ones who are still standing feel lost. After their parents died in the original series, all they had was each other. What do they have now? Who are they on their own? This story brings the gang back together, but – in true RUNAWAYS fashion – probably not the way you’d expect.”

Rowell teases how this new series will launch, “Chase makes a huge mistake – and then immediately drags Nico into his mess,” continued Rowell. “This whole arc explores what it actually means to be a Runaway. Are they a team? Are they a family? Do they have any reason to get back together?”

Runaways debuted in 2003 as part of Marvel’s Tsunami imprint. It was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. It was eventually cancelled just over a year later in September 2004 at issue 18. The series was then rebooted in 2005 before being cancelled once again in 2009 after issue 14 of Volume 3.

It told the story of a dysfunctional group of kids who inherited their parents powers and the adventures they went on to dethrone their parents who ran the criminal organization known as “the Pride” and the the numerous villains who tried to fill the vacuum once “the Pride” was dethroned. The cast included witches, aliens, mutants, cyborgs, and even Skrulls.

Nico, Chase, Karolina, Molly and Old Lace begin a brand new journey this September. Will they be able to continue to outrun their misadventures?
