J.J. Abrams Replaces Colin Trevorrow As Writer and Director for Star Wars Episode IX!

Disney has gone back to the well and brought on board J.J Abrams to finish what he started. Abrams will return to direct and write the final film of the new Star Wars trilogy.

In his first Star Wars film, he partnered with legendary writer Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. This time around Abrams will partner with Chris Terrio who wrote the script for Argo and helped pen Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. With such heavy guns coming in to close out the trilogy it seems Disney is banking hard to ensure the trilogy has a proper send-off.

Abrams will be the first director besides Star Wars creator George Lucas to direct more than one Star Wars movie.

Lucasfilm released the following statement announcing Abrams return:

J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy praised Abrams previous work and expressed her excitement about his return, With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.”

A big surprise with this announcement is the fact that Jack Thorne was brought on to write just last month and his name is not included in the release. It’s unclear what will happen with Thorne.

This announcement comes off the news Lucasfilm is working on an Obi-Wan Kenobi solo movie.

Now that we know that J.J Abrams is returning to finish off the trilogy many of us can breathe a sigh of a relief the series won’t fall victim to a Hollywood hot potato.
