Wonder Woman Retcon Confirmed by Gal Gadot

Wonder Woman

In Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeGal Gadot’s Wonder Woman declared, “100 years ago, I walked away from mankind from a century of horrors. Man made a world where standing together is impossible.”

We assumed the horrors Diana saw in World War I is what drove her to walk away. However, that didn’t seem to be the case. At the end of the Wonder Woman solo movie, Diana wasn’t disgusted by humanity. In fact, she actually embraces them. She sees the horrors they are capable of, but also sees the goodness they are capable of. She resists Ares’ attempt to persuade her and chooses to fight for humanity.

Ares describes humanity, “They are ugly, filled with hatred, weak. Just like your Captain Trevor. Gone and left you nothing. And for what? Pathetic!”

Then Wonder Woman has the chance to crush Dr. Poison. Ares once again tempts Wonder Woman, “She is the perfect example of these humans and unworthy of your sympathy in every way. Destroy her, Diana. You know that she deserves it. They all do. Do it!”

However, after she remembers Steve Trevor’s last words to her, Wonder Woman responds, “You’re wrong about them. They’re everything you say, but so much more…And I believe in love.”

Wonder Woman embraces her love for humanity and defeats Ares. It wouldn’t make sense that she would be hiding from the world. And with the Wonder Woman sequel announced, there are rumors it will take place during the Cold War. So just how does the line from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fit in with Wonder Woman’s story now?

Gal Gadot was extremely blunt during a press event in Beijing that they retconned the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice line.

None of us knew exactly, exactly, what’s the backstory of Wonder Woman. And once they decided to shoot the solo movie, [the] Wonder Woman movie, and we started to dig in and understand the core of the character, we realized that actually there is no way that Wonder Woman will EVER give up on mankind. The reason why she left the island was because she wanted to make their life better and safer. They are her colleagues, so I’m giving you a very honest answer, that it was sometimes, you know, in creative processes establish something that is not necessarily the right decision. But then you can always correct it and change it. So Wonder Woman will always be there as far as she [has] concerns for mankind.

With this retcon, it opens the door for a number of others. What else do you think DC should retcon from Man of Steel or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice? Do you think retconning these connected movies so early is a good decision?
