Hellboy Release Date Announced

Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment’s upcoming Hellboy reboot starring Stranger Things star David Harbour announced the film will come to theaters on January 11, 2019.

Joining Harbour’s Hellboy will be Milla Jovovich as the Blood Queen, Ian McShane as Hellboy’s adoptive father Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, and Daniel Dae Kim as Major Ben Daimio after Deadpool’s Ed Skrein exited the role following accusations of white-washing.

The Hellboy reboot is being written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola alongside Eureka’s Andrew Cosby and Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Christopher Golden. Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall will direct the upcoming film.

Mignola created Hellboy in 1993 with his first appearance in San Diego Comic Con Comics #2 from Dark Horse. He is a demon raised by a government professor who oversees the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.). The B.P.R.D. works to fight against supernatural evildoers.

The upcoming film is expected to follow “The Wild Hunt” storyline from the comics. Hellboy comes face to face with the evil witch Nimue the Blood Queen. In order to slay the Blood Queen, Hellboy and his team must embark on a treacherous mission to collect the legendary sword Excalibur. However, the Blood Queen isn’t the only foe Hellboy faces. He faces his own inner demons and his prophesied destiny of bringing hellfire to Earth. With the legendary Excalibur at hand it’s quite possible he could fulfill that destiny.

Hellboy’s last live-action appearance was back in 2008 with the Guillermo Del Toro directed Hellboy: The Golden Army starring Ron Perlman as Hellboy. Del Toro and Perlman Hellboy and Hellboy: The Golden Army took the character to new heights and brought him to a general audience. Here’s to hoping David Harbour and Neil Marshall’s vision can do the same or even better. I know I can’t wait to see what David Harbour can do as Hellboy after his solid performance as Sheriff Jim Hopper in Stranger Things.

Hellboy comes to theaters on January 11, 2019.
