The Golden Globes recently released its list of nominees for 2018. One notable absence has been the wildly successful Wonder Woman film. Fans have taken note and launched a petition to help director Patty Jenkins get placed as a nominee.

The petition has already gotten over 8800 signatures. It is currently aiming for 9,000.

Wonder Woman scored well with both critics and fans. It’s something other films in the DC Extended Universe have failed to do up to this point. On Rotten Tomatoes it received a 92% Critic score and an 89% Audience Score. While Metacritic gave it a 76 Critic score and a 7.7/10 user score.

The petition states:

In an industry with glaring gender disparities, the Golden Globes ought to honor women who have gone above and beyond to cultivate success. The roadblocks women face in an industry dominated by male decisionmakers are not to be ignored, and the success of this film proved that Jenkins is a artisan who can move audiences to places of awe, tears, and inspiration.

Please sign this petition if you want to see Patty Jenkins nominated as Best Director at the Golden Globes!

Mekeisha Madden Toby of Rotten Tomatoes even wrote an editorial about how the Golden Globes are actively snubbing female movie directors. They even highlighted one Twitter user who said, “Hollywood has been dominated by white males since the beginning of time, the misrepresentation in the directors category of the Golden Globes this year is a huge disappointment & the continuing injustice towards women and people of color who make such incredible films every year.”

Toby insinuates that these female directors deserve a Golden Globe nomination due to their high Rotten Tomato scores.

While Toby doesn’t come out and state her own opinion on the matter, we can infer she believes the Golden Globe’s are blatantly choosing men over women because of some kind of gender bias. But as one Twitter user points out this is actually the equality many of them claim to be looking for.

You don’t see petitions for all of the other male directors who made exceptional films. I don’t see one for James Mangold’s exceptional Logan film or what about Matt Reeves’ War for the Planet of the Apes, Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, or Jon Watt’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. All four of those films are ranked higher than Mudbound and Detroit on Rotten Tomatoes’ own list of the best movies of 2017.

I personally see it as movies based on comic book heroes rarely get award-winning recognition. The notable exception being The Dark Knight’s Heath Ledger winning an Oscar posthumously. Other than that Suicide Squad won an Oscar for Best Costume.

While that explains Wonder Woman, it doesn’t explain Mudbound, Lady Bird, or Detroit. But Lady Bird is actually up for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Golden Globe. What a snub! Oh let’s look at Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. Holy smokes we see Mary J. Blige for Mudbound and Laurie Metcalf for Lady Bird. It’s a snub, I tell you!

But there’s more – Best Screenplay. What a shock Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird is nominated! Talk about a snub!

If you actually dig into the Golden Globes nominees, you will see it has nothing to do with some kind of gender bias. It has to do with the quality of the work and while many praised Wonder Woman, the movie still had its faults. That might be why Jenkins didn’t receive a Golden Globe nomination.

But what do you think? Do you think Patty Jenkins deserves a Golden Globe nomination for Wonder Woman? Do you think there is a conspiracy against women being nominated for Golden Globes?

Wonder Woman is currently available on DVD. The sequel is expected to begin filming next summer.
