Former World of Warcraft Team Lead Mark Kern Makes Huge Statement About Politics in Entertainment

Mark Kern

Another Oscars season has come and passed. And as to be expected Hollywood’s elite decided it was an amazing night to lecture Americans. Not surprising to me this year’s ratings took a big nosedive as people are tuning in less and less to this nonsense. This Tweet from World of Warcraft team lead and Diablo 2 producer Mark Kern came as no surprise.

In response to the news about the plunging ratings, he wrote, “I think we need to get politics out of entertainment. It’s ruining movies, comics and games.”

I believe this has been the feeling of the vast majority of people for some time now. We want to be entertained, not lectured to, especially by people who have no moral high ground to stand on. But is this story bigger than we think?

It all started on November 9th, 2016

That’s the night America elected Donald Trump as president. It wasn’t the first election where my candidate of choice didn’t win and as someone who works with political officials, I know it won’t be the last. But since that day it seems that Hollywood has gone from unpleasant smugness to all out freak out mode in the span of one election night. I’ve seen groups of people react poorly to bad news before, but this was something else.

Don’t tell Ms. Jones that the Communist Party endorsed Former President Obama, should that be an albatross for him? Because that ideology has done more to harm both humanity and the environment than some meth heads looking for someone to blame.

Glad that Ms. Winter thinks her opinion shapes public policy.

These are but a very few examples of actors losing their collective minds over the results of the last presidential election. We saw during that campaign season the left coast was heavily invested in 2016. They even created a public service announcement begging Americans to vote their way. It was pretty pathetic.

I still love you Iron Man!

Post Election to Now

Since then it seems that EVERYTHING is about politics when it comes to our entertainment. Hollywood over the last year plus has gone all out on their thoughtful assault on President Trump’s administration. This was even more evident during the Oscar’s when late night host Jimmy Kimmel admitted that movies were made to  “upset [Vice President] Mike Pence.”

This is the clear source of the issue for me. I’m glad that Kimmel went on to admit this because we all felt it was true. Hollywood has forgotten that they live off OUR money, OUR labor, and OUR whims. Not the other way around. Of course, I’m not saying that they shouldn’t have opinions, but what I am saying is that they’ve forgotten their bread and butter.

Glass Houses…

As the saying goes, those in glass houses shouldn’t cast stones. And for an industry that has been rocked by allegations after allegations of sexual misconduct, rape, and assault. It’s cute to see them try and take some sort of high moral ground. Even those who weren’t involved in such actions have their own sins to address.

This is the same group of people who stood up and cheered an unrepentant child predator’s Oscar win a few years back. But it’s okay, because of #MeToo…

Mark’s Right

I’m with Mark Kern. Maybe it’s high time for Hollywood’s elite to take some time and detox from politics. I mean even I need to do this from time to time. You cannot live a normal life if all you’re obsessing about politics. But if that’s what they want to do, then don’t force us to join. If their ratings, box office numbers, and general blowback isn’t a hint, we just don’t care about what they have to say.

At best they are our jesters, and it’s time they remember that.
