Beware of spoilers to Black Panther, ye who enter here

Wakanda is no stranger to war. The country endured its own civil war at the end of this February’s Black PantherA nation of proud and brave warriors will sometimes be called to battle even against familiar banners. That was part of the inner turmoil Wakanda suffered in the fantastic film. And as many know, Wakanda changed because of it.

At the end of the film King T’Challa reveals that Wakanda will share its technological advances with the outside world. Something the outside world isn’t even aware of. It makes the end of the film meaningful and memorable. The next Marvel Cinematic Universe film will be the biggest of them all, Avengers: Infinity War. Every defender of Earth is being called to fight the forces of Thanos! That includes many of the fantastic characters from Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther.

Danai Gurira plays one of the most memorable characters in the entire film. Okoye is dedicated to the safety and betterment of Wakanda. Almost to a fault. But she learned. Sounds like she’s going to continue to change to become more than a Wakandan citizen. Gurira told Entertainment Weekly how Okoye will adapt to this brave, new world:

“Change is scary…But I think the learning curve is to become a citizen of the world versus a citizen of Wakanda.”

Okoye will leap into battle against any foe to defend both Wakanda and the world. At the end of Black Panther Okoye chooses duty over love; King T’Challa over her lover W’Kabi. It’s great character work that builds tension and drama. It’s these kinds of story elements that helped Black Panther become more than just a superhero film.

Hopefully, the team behind Avengers: Infinity War learned from the great lessons taught by Ryan Coogler, Chadwich Boseman, Danai Gurira and the rest of the Black Panther crew.
