Spider-Man Spinoff Nightwatch Movie in the Works!

Nightwatch

Spike Lee and Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari are reportedly working together to bring Marvel character Nightwatch to the big screen for Sony.

The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Spike Lee could direct the film, but his involvement is very early at this point. Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari is expected to write the script for the film which will focus on scientist Dr. Kevin Trench. However, an original draft for the film has already been written by screenwriter Ed Ricourt.

Nightwatch first appeared in the comics in Web of Spider-Man #97 all the way back in February of 1993. The character was created by Terry Kavanagh and Alex Saviuk. He has an interesting backstory. He witnesses a man get killed by a group of terrorists. When the coast is clear he unmasks the lifeless body to discover that it’s an older version of himself. He decides to go into hiding on an island and avoid his fate by never putting on the costume. H eventually decides to discover how the costume came to be and becomes one of New York City’s heroes fighting against the likes of Carnage. He would go on to team up with Spider-Man, Captain America, Deathlok, and more.

Nightwatch is a relatively minor character who has only appeared in 42 comic books.

Nightwatch would join a growing stable of Sony’s Marvel based films. They recently relaunched Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and they are currently wrapping things up on Venom which is expected to hit theaters this October.

Sony is also working on Silver and Black starring Silver Sable and Black Cat. They also have a Morbius the Living Vampire project in the works.
