Taylor Swift Episode Was the “Last Straw” For Donald Glover’s Deadpool Animated Series

Animated Deadpool - FXX and 20th Century Fox

Bad Blood?

As many fans know, Donald Glover was recently planning an Animated Deadpool series over at FX. Considering the success the character’s been having lately, the series made a lot of sense. Unfortunately, it was cancelled last week.

FX released a statement:

“Due to creative differences, FX, Donald Glover, Stephen Glover and Marvel Television have agreed to part ways on Marvel’s ‘Deadpool’ animated series, FX will no longer be involved with the project. FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on ‘Legion,’ which will continue.”

A number of articles hinted Glover’s scheduling conflicts might have led to the cancellation. This would not be the case as Glover released a 14-page finale script for series on Twitter, that he has since deleted.

Well, Donald’s brother Stephen was also going to be a writer for the show, and it sounds like he didn’t take too kindly to the cancellation either. In tweets that have since been deleted, Stephen Glover mentioned what would be the straw that broke the camel’s back for the show.

“There really was a Taylor Swift episode…It was HILARIOUS. And it definitely was the last straw lol….Our show wasn’t too black…It wasn’t really that black at all. But we definitely wanted to give Rick and Morty a run for their money and I think we would have. Proud of the gang.”

That’s certainly interesting. Fox is no stranger to controversy. But to shy away from a fight with Taylor Swift’s PR team? That sounds surprisingly skittish from the company who gave us Married with Children, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. But if it was the “last straw” than the writers were already having issues with the network. Considering how incredible Atlanta is, maybe it’s better that the story goes untold rather than the Glover brothers having to change their tone and approach for the sake of niceties.

Given FX’s statement and Fox’s previous animated work that isn’t afraid to make fun of anything under the sun, it’s more than likely the dispute was with Marvel Television, a subsidiary of Disney, rather than Fox.

Considering how great that 14-page satirical finale was, let’s hope that Stephen and Donald Glover will one day get their chance at Deadpool, the merc’ with a mouth.
