Born to be Bad

Nicolas Cage has played a wide range of characters in his long career, and is no stranger to comic book movies. The actor famously brought Ghost Rider to life in a couple of a films. They weren’t great… But they had some great effects and an unsurprisingly over-the-top performance from the prolific actor. Well, now he’s set his sights on some other comic book legends.

While speaking with JoBlo, Cage mentioned a couple of villains he’d love to sink his teeth into:

I mean, I think my comic book days are kind of…I’m on to other things, but I always thought I’d make a great Joker and I always thought that I would’ve been a good villain in one of the Marvel [movies] like Doctor Doom. But, Doctor Doom you have to wear that mask, but I thought the story leading up to Doctor Doom could’ve been interesting. At this point if I was to go back into the format it would probably have to be as a villain.

When the interviewer points out just how intriguing a Nicolas Cage-Joker would be, the actor replies enthusiastically.

It would be the perfect one for me to go even more off the rails than I’ve ever done before and, y’know, it’d be fun.

Cage is famous for absurd performances that blend humor and insanity. In his prime, he would have made an excellent Joker or Dr. Doom. And who knows? Joaquin Phoenix is the next actor to bring the most famous villain in comics to life, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be other opportunities. The DC Films Universe is expanding, with numerous versions of many of their characters in development. While Warner Bros. and DC probably aren’t looking to make another Joker film, Cage would play a great Clown Prince of Crime.
