Avengers: Infinity War Director Confirms Major Theory About Soul Stone

Thanos

**Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War Below**

Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo confirmed a major Soul Stone theory during a Q&A session at his alma mater.

Russo was asked a question about a specific scenario that takes place in the film just after Thanos is attacked by Thor wielding his new weapon, Stormbreaker. Thor comes flying in from above juiced up on the power of Stormbreaker and throws his weapon right at Thanos. He lands a direct hit puncturing Thanos in the chest. However, Thanos still wields the Infinity Gauntlet and has now fully completed it after acquiring the Mind Stone. Thanos then snaps his fingers and he is transported to a field surrounded by darkness and lit by an orange sky. Thanos is then confronted by a young Gamora who questions his decision to wipe out half of all life in the universe.

The predominant theory is this encounter takes place within the Soul Stone.

Well, Joe Russo confirmed that theory.

“Yeah it’s- it’s implied it’s the Soul Stone. It’s all orange around, then he’s inside the Soul Stone with the amount of power that it took to snap his fingers- he has this out of body experience with Thanos. When he goes inside the Soul stone he has this kind of conversation with the younger version of his Gamora.”

Russo was then asked a follow up question, “So she’s there?” He elaborated:

“She’s in fact, yes. It was an attempt an attempt on our part- because we don’t like two-dimensional roles or three-dimensional villains every villain is a hero in their own story and as insane and psychotic and brutal and violent as Thanos is he’s a more complex villain if you go on a journey with him emotionally. He does care about things and it is complicated for him to execute his plan and it cost him something. He said at the end “It cost him everything” and that it was the only thing he loved which was Gamora which is why we put him back with her at the end. I just want to reiterate with the audience that he does feel true emotion even though he is a monster.”

Not only does Russo confirm the theory that there appears to be a pocket universe within the Marvel Cinematic Universe Soul Stone, but it’s quite possible that Gamora is alive and well within the Soul Stone.

However, it does appear this pocket universe is different from the comics version of Soulworld. Thanos doesn’t see the adult version of Gamora that he kills. Instead, he sees the younger version which he “rescued” from her home world. In the comics Soulworld was a place of peace where the souls gathered in there acted as a collective.

It appears in the MCU, the Soul Stone might show you the souls collected in there as you would view them. It was made very apparent that Thanos still sees Gamora as his young daughter rather than the fierce, adult warrior she is. And the young daughter is who he sees when he enters the Soul Stone.

Do you think Gamora will be back after the events of Avengers 4?
