There’s has been quite a bit of discussion on Lando Calrissian’s sexuality in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story. The Express speculated that recent trailers indicated Lando was flirting with Han Solo when he says, “You might want to buckle up, baby.”

Well, Star Wars and Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jon Kasdan spoke to MSN and confirmed that Lando Calrissian is pansexual. Jonathan Kasdan replied, “I would say yes.” He added, “There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality.” He continued, “I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.” He concluded, “He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun. I don’t know where it will go.”

A pansexual is someone who is not limited in sexual choice with regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity.

However, his father was more cryptic saying, “That is her personality. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn’t.”

Jon Kasdan would double down on his comments on Twitter saying, “Sorry to have brought identity/gender politics into… NOPE. Not sorry AT ALL cause ’cause I think the GALAXY George gave birth to in ’77 is big enough for EVERYONE: straight, gay, black, white, brown, Twi’lek, Sullustan, Wookiee, DROID & anything inbetween. #droidrights #weAREsentient”

While Jon Kasdan, might be a Star Wars writer, he does appear to be misremembering some significant moments of Star Wars movie lore. In the first movie, droids don’t have rights. They are property. This is clearly seen with R2-D2 as he continues his mission for Princess Leia to deliver the plea for help to Obi-Wan Kenobi. R2-D2 says he is the property of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

This is even further emphasized in the prequel trilogies when Anakain Skywalker physically builds C-3PO. Not to mention, the Separatists employed a droid army to wage war against the Republic.

It appears Droid Rights is a brand new part of the Star Wars canon for Solo: A Star Wars Story. That’s not to say there isn’t any precedence for it. It’s never shown up in any movies, but there have been references in Star Wars: The Old Republic as well as a number of Star Wars guides with HK-01 leading a droid revolution. IG-88 also planned an uprising when his sentience programming became too powerful to control.

This is also the first time that Lando Calrissian has been explicitly labeled as anything but a ladies man. Lando has historically only flirted with woman. Obviously, when he was first introduced he took to Princess Leia right away. As you can see, he doesn’t flirt with Han, Chewbacca, or C-3PO.

This portrayal would continue into Star Wars Rebels where he showed interest in Hera Syndulla and not Kanan.

It looks like Star Wars and Jon Kasdan are making some significant changes to Star Wars lore and trying to hide behind George Lucas to justify their decision of inserting “identity/gender politics” into Star Wars.

Do you think Jon Kasdan and Star Wars should be trying to insert identity/gender politics into their movies or should they focus on good storytelling and leave out the politics?
