Fact Check: Captain Marvel Isn’t the First Superhero Movie Composed By a Woman

It looks like some in the media are looking to pull the same card that was used in the run-up to Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. Which card do you ask? The card, claiming the first “Insert Group” has something to do with the movie. In this case of Black Panther, the film was being proclaimed as the first black superhero film, which ignored Blade, Spawn, Steel, Hancock, and more. Now a number of media outlets are claiming that Captain Marvel will be the first superhero film to have a female composer.
CBR, Indiewire, SyFy, made the claim that Captain Marvel composer Pinar Toprak is the first woman to compose the score to a superhero film.
But there is but one problem with that. It’s simply not true.
One Twitter user pointed to Shirley Walker who composed the music for Warner Bros.’ Batman: Mask of the Phantasm animated movie. He also pointed out Yoko Kanno, who composed Cowboy: Bebop: The Movie, Wolf’s Rain, as well as a number of Ghost in the Shell films.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was originally planned for a direct-to-video release, but ultimately had a theatrical release on December 25, 1993.
That’s not to take away Toprak’s accomplishment, she is the first woman to compose a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. She joins Hans Zimmer, Ludwig Goransson, Christophe Beck, Ramin Djawadi, Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri, and more.
Captain Marvel is expected to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
