LGBT Activists Mad After Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Deletes Lesbian Reveal Scene

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

The diversity police are after yet another movie. After Kate Leth decried that Avengers: Infinity War didn’t have enough LGBT characters and the LGBT lobby group GLAAD went after both Marvel and DC for their lack of LGBT representation, a number of LGBT activists are now going after Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom because it deleted a scene revealing one of the characters was a lesbian.

Actress Danielle Pineda, who plays dinosaur veterinarian Zia Rodriguez, saw one of her lines cut from the film that revealed the character was a lesbian.

Pineda described the scene to Build:

“It’s me and Chris Pratt and we are in a military vehicle with all of these mercenaries. I look at Chris and am like, ‘Yeah. Square jaw. Good bone structure. Tall. Muscles. I don’t date men, but if I did, it would be you. It would gross me out, but I would do it.’ It was cool, because it was a little insight into my character.”

Pineda would explain why the scene was cut:

“I understood why they cut it — for [the] sake of time.”

LGBT activists weren’t pleased by this in the least. In Logo, Samantha Manzella wrote, That’s unfortunate, since we’d gladly trade two minutes of raptor time for a little bit of on-screen queer character development.”

This was followed by BBC’s Newsbeat saying, “Pineda’s character joins a growing list of “LGBT characters that are all talk.” Mashable also complains about Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom cutting the scene. Alison Foreman writes,  “You’re telling me this killer quip, lesbian reveal combo didn’t make the movie… because of time?! Let me in that editing room—I will find a few dozens “Wow! Dinosaurs!” reaction shots we can do without. ”

I think people are paying good money to see Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, a film franchise about dinosaurs. Why would they not want to see any Dinosaurs? Why would they want their dinosaur scenes cut out in favor of a poor joke about dating men?

And while we’re on the subject. How does being a lesbian equate to character development? There’s nothing wrong with having an LGBT character, but adding a descriptor like lesbian to the character doesn’t equate to character development.

It reminds me of how Iceman was portrayed before his cancellation by Marvel Comics months ago. Hollywood activists and their ilk want to paint people within the gay community as something other than normal Joes and Janes. In their view, they have to be flamboyant or over the top. They need to ensure everyone knows what their sexual preference is.

That hasn’t been my experience living across America. Like anything, you normally don’t know someone’s sexuality until they decided to reveal it to you, and it’s usually not done on the fly in a flippant manner riding around in a military vehicle with a bunch of mercenaries.

Crazily enough, the actions by these LGBT activists have actually seem to be having the complete opposite effect on the American public as they’d like.

GLAAD released a study in March which found “that acceptance of LGBTQ people is slipping, and discrimination is increasing, in the face of attacks, bias, and erasure by the Trump administration.” This conclusion was based off their results that found more LGBTQ people are reporting discrimination, and Americans are less comfortable being around LGBTQ people, among others.

However, many conservatives and Trump supporters believe this acceptance has decreased because the LGBT lobby including GLAAD is no longer supporting “live and let live” arguments, but are now trying to impose their way of life on businesses and people who might disagree with them.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has already grossed $420 million internationally and it’s projected to bring in upwards of $135 million in its opening weekend here in the United States.
