“Dragon Ball Super” Reveals Gohan’s Super Saiyan Controversy

Gohan

Power Levels Explained

While the Dragon Ball Super show concluded earlier this year, the series has not come to an end. It lives on in manga form and will premiere in a feature film later this year entitled, Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

All of your favorite characters will make an appearance, though sadly, a few lovable secondary characters have been tossed aside for the central characters. Most notably has been the absence of Gohan from the marketing for the film. The son of Goku was once the prodigious heir-apparent at the end of the Cell Saga. But fans can’t get enough of their Goku. For a few years, Gohan’s powers haven’t exactly been up to par. He’s certainly powerful, but nothing compared to his father. Now we might know why.

Chapter 39 of the Dragon Ball Super manga was released this week. Check out the Shonen Jump manga’s latest chapter on Viz media. Gohan is currently fighting a fused opponent named Kefla. While Kefla is mocking Gohan for not turning Super Saiyan, Gohan instead reveals a different power-up that allows him to get some shots in, prompting his opponent to say, “No need to turn Super Saiyan? Why’s that?”

To which Gohan responds, “I chose to keep evolving as a Human, not a Saiyan. I’m not relying on my Saiyan blood anymore.”

An interesting explanation for Gohan’s differing power levels. Sometimes it feels like Goku’s son is holding back, sometimes it feels like the writers don’t always care for him. But how will this relate to the upcoming film?

A Power Problem

As you can tell, Gohan’s not without his strength. His “Human blood”-based powers were able to match Goku’s Super Saiyan powers as well as [easyazon_link identifier=”B07CH6N8RK” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Super Saiyan Blue[/easyazon_link]However, the fact that Gohan is now denying his Saiyan blood explains quite a lot about his recent history. It’s unclear how long he’s felt this way, but for almost 20 years the character hasn’t achieved the power he seemingly had as a child. Instead, he’s been floundering in the story as a supporting character who has occasion to fight insignificant baddies on the sidelines. Not the powerful prodigal son he was meant to be.

That being said, Gohan is still an awesome character. A more intelligent and logical form of his father, who can have quite a temper sometimes. Now, the heroes might be facing their most powerful villain of all in the form of Broly, the massive Super Saiyan who’s returning for the upcoming film. While Gohan might not be powerful enough to fight Broly, there’s little doubt he’ll make an appearance in the film. The only doubt is whether or not Gohan will pack enough punch to make an impact on Broly.

You can find Gohan and the rest of his Saiyan family each month in a new chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly hits Japanese theaters on December 14th and North American theaters sometime in January.
