The Man of Steel is about to become one of the most famed monster hunters ever. Henry Cavill has been cast as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of The Witcher.

Deadline reports the Man of Steel star will be the lead in the fantasy adaptation of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher. Sapkowski’s [easyazon_link identifier=”0316438979″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Witcher Saga[/easyazon_link] includes eight novels and story collections. The series blew up in popularity after video game developer CD Projekt Red adapted the series into three different video games with the most popular [easyazon_link identifier=”B01K6010FM” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt[/easyazon_link] hitting shelves in 2015. The entire Witcher series had sold over 25 million copies by the end of 2016.

The Netflix series will see Cavill take on the role of Geralt, a Witcher. Witchers are monster hunters who are not only highly trained, but also use body modification to obtain supernatural abilities. These abilities give them an edge in their fight against the many different types of monsters that live within in the world of the The Witcher. But they don’t just hunt monsters for free, they do it for a price, usually gold. And Geralt is no ordinary Witcher. He also gets involved in the political struggles of the land.

While Geralt finds his way in the world fighting monsters and confronting people who are sometimes worse than the monsters he hunts, he will cross paths with a powerful sorceress and a young princess with a dark secret. The three will have to navigate the world of The Witcher together.

Cavill pitched himself to become Geralt in an interview with IGN where he stated he had just finished replaying The Witcher 3. It was apparent he’s a huge fan of the series.

Cavill joins writer, executive producer, and showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Hissrich is no stranger to Netflix series as she’s worked on Daredevil, The Defenders, and Umbrella Academy for the streaming giant.

The series will see Alik Sakharov of House of Cards and Game of Thrones fame direct at least four episodes. He will be joined by directors Alex Garcia Lopez and Charlotte Charlotte Brändström.

Sapkowski will serve as a creative consultant on the Netflix series. Sean Daniel, Jason Brown, and Kathy Lingg at Hivemind Entertainment will be executive producers alongside Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko of the Polish production company Platige Image.

Cavill is a huge name for the Netflix series to bring in. He most recently starred opposite Tom Cruise in [easyazon_link identifier=”B07FSZ9TP7″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Mission: Impossible – Fallout[/easyazon_link] and has been a standard bearer for the DC Extended Universe as Superman starring in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League.
