Our 13 favorite comic book covers segment is back! We’ve been a little delayed since I was off to Ireland in August, but we are starting to get back into the swing of things as September comes to a close.

After getting Chuck Dixon, Graham Nolan, and Roland Mann‘s 13 favorite covers, we were lucky enough to get Frank Fosco to share with us his 13 favorite comic book covers. Fosco is a veteran comic book artist who broke into the comic book industry in 1983 with Megaton. He would go on to work for DC Comics on titles like Robin, Steel, and Legionnaires. Fosco would also work with Image Comics’ Erik Larsen on a number of Savage Dragon issues.

However, you probably know Frank from his work on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Frank was the penciler on the Turtles when they were being published at Image Comics and his work on them is legendary. In fact, his run on the Turtles is currently being reprinted by IDW Publishing under Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Urban Legends. Frank is even providing a number of variant covers for this series.

But let’s get into Frank’s 13 favorite covers. And just to clarify, these are Frank’s 13 favorite covers that he has done himself. The work that he is the most proud of.

1. Triad

Triad

“My first cover I did was for TRIAD RADIO WXFM 106 Chicago. It was a free publication you could pick up at record stores. Remember record stores?

When TRIAD asked me to do this they were doing an article on superheroes. I think they thought I would give them Spider-Man or some established character.

Instead I gave them my character ETHRIAN which I had created with my friend Ed Flores seven years earlier of the magazine date when we were in high school.”

2. Megaton #6

Megaton #6

“Gary Carlson saw the TRIAD magazine and found me. My character ETHRIAN would be in his independent comic Megaton.

9 years later ETHRIAN would make his second cover on Megaton #6. Years later when Image Comics came to be, ETHRIAN would be in Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon as an ongoing backup for fourteen issues. Then a year later when Vanguard was a backup in SD ETHRIAN was in those stories too.”

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7

“When I did the turtles for Image comics. Really like the overall design of this. This cover was one of the fan favorites.

Erik Larsen landed the TMNT job for Image comics and got Gary Carlson and myself to be the main 2 guys on the book.¬†Erik would ink the covers I penciled from issue 3 through 23.”

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13

“These simple images make for great covers. I think so anyway. Fans were perplexed at whom could possibly be Shredder.

Pretty cool when previews would come out months before the issue did so while fans were trying to guess who is Shredder the reveal was a surprise.”

5. Savage Dragon #179

Vanguard #8

“The Vanguard run. Backups in Savage Dragon. Love the action and motion on this cover. While not front covers these were the back covers to Savage Dragon featuring Vanguard.

My character ETHRIAN would make an appearance in this series.”

7. Savage Dragon #184

Vanguard #12

“Sentimental favorite of fans.

Vanguard saying bye to Earth after being here for about 40 years in the comic universe from Megaton to Savage Dragon to the Image run of TMNT. Yes–Vanguard was in the Image run of TMNT.

This first backup I did of Vanguard would go on for 12 issues.”

8. Savage Dragon #200

“A year later Vanguard would be in backups of Savage Dragon again. This time his exploits would be in space and on his home planet.

This is cover 4 of the 6 part series. ETHRIAN would be in this series too.”

10. Savage Dragon #235

Savage Dragon #235

“Back cover for Savage Dragon 235 I think. Just because I like the old worn out look and the Atlas Monster era thing.

Like some kid from the late 50’s early 60’s rolled it up and stuck it in his blue jeans back pocket.”
