Jamie Lee Curtis Declares New Halloween Movie is Part of #MeToo Movement

The hype is real for the upcoming Halloween sequel starring Jamie Lee Curtis. But the film won’t just be a horror film. According to Jamie Lee Curtis it is a #MeToo movie.

This new film isn’t a reboot, but is actually a sequel that sees Curtis’ Laurie Strode once again face down the silent masked madman in Michael Myers. But Strode won’t be alone. She’ll get the help of her estranged daughters as she prepares for a final stand against the man who shaped her entire adult life.

The legendary scream queen spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the latest Halloween film about why it is a #MeToo movie. She talked about how the film evolved from the original script as it went into production and how that evolution incorporated the #MeToo movement.

“Well, I do not believe that when David and Danny and Jeff were writing this, they were looking at it as a way of incorporating the #MeToo movement into this retelling or revisiting of this story. I think it is the natural occurrence of a zeitgeist, of a change, of a shift in thought and action which comes from these moments of tremendous cultural change.”

Curtis then dives into why she believes the film is a #MeToo movement.

“Clearly this movie will be another voice in that same chorus of women taking back their stories, saying, ‘We are not that story, we have arrived, and we will be the ones that write our own stories,’ and that only comes from the bravery of a few. This movie will be a part of that wave. I didn’t realize it until we were making it, and I realized what Laurie was doing, and that’s very powerful.”

While the Halloween movie evolved from script and into production, the #MeToo movement has also evolved since it began after the numerous accusations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct against Harvey Weinstein. Actresses such as Olivia Munn and Kate Beckinsale shared stories of the depravity of Hollywood. But there’s also been a darker side to the #MeToo Movement. We’ve seen people like Chris Hardwick accused by an ex-girlfriend of abusive behavior. He was suspended from his job and even disinvited from a comedy appearance. After an investigation, no actual wrongdoing was found and Hardwick was reinstated.

More recently, actor Sean Penn openly spoke about the problems with the #MeToo movement describing it as “receptacle of the salacious.” He would go on to say, “We don’t know what’s a fact in many of the cases. Salacious is as soon as you call something a movement that is really a series of many individual accusers, victims, accusations, some of which are unfounded. The spirit of much of what has been the #MeToo movement is to divide men and women.” He would add, “I don’t want it to be a trend, and I’m very suspicious of a movement that gets glommed on to in great stridency and rage and without nuance. And even when people try to discuss it in a nuanced way, the nuance itself is attacked.”

The movement also appears to have been politicized especially following the accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

What do you think about Jamie Lee Curtis’ declaration that Halloween is a #MeToo movie? Will this help or hinder the box office sales?
