New Japanese Dragon Ball Super: Broly Trailer Hints at Alternative Goku Origin Story

Dragon Ball Super: Broly just dropped their second Japanese trailer and it hints at an alternative Goku origin story.

Take a look:

This new trailer is vastly different from the first one which focused more on the multiple battles Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, and Broly will partake in. Instead, we get a more subdued trailer that really focuses on emotional storytelling with hints at the origins of Goku, Vegeta, and Broly and how Frieza plays into it.

In fact, this new trailer seems to hint that the Dragon Ball Minus: The Departure of the Fated Child bonus story in Shonen Jump back in 2014 is actually canon. In that story, Goku’s origins are much like Superman’s. His parents, Bardock and Gine send Goku/Kakarot to Earth from Planet Vegeta in order to escape the planet’s destruction at the hands of Frieza. The story intimated that one of Frieza’s scientists, Kikono, informed him that a Saiyan would eventually become a “Super Saiyan God” and rival Frieza.

This is different from Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku. In this version, Goku is a newborn when he is sent to Earth. He’s also sent to Earth as a conqueror, not to avoid its destruction.

As you can see from the trailer, Goku appears to be a young child as his parents send him off in a capsule. He’s definitely missing his parents and doesn’t appear to want to leave them. It definitely doesn’t look like he’s being sent off as a would-be conqueror. You also can clearly see Frieza launching a massive attack on Planet Vegeta that most likely would destroy the planet.

The trailer also features a young Broly and young Vegeta. It definitely appears that King Vegeta might be trying to groom Vegeta into this “Super Saiyan God.” You can clearly see him examining Vegeta in what appears to be an incubator. It’s possible King Vegeta’s experiments might be the reason Frieza intervened and launched his assault on Planet Vegeta.

As for Broly, he appears to be almost feral. You can see him eating out of an egg while he’s all alone. It’s possible his great power comes from his struggles to survive.

What do you think about the new Dragon Ball Super: Broly trailer? Do you think they will be changing Goku’s origin story?

Dragon Ball Super: Broly comes to theaters in Japan on December 14, 2018. It will premiere in North America on January 16, 2019.
