Report: Ewan McGregor to Play Birds of Prey Villain!

A new report indicates that Ewan McGregor, who played Obi-wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequels, is in talks to play the villain for the upcoming Birds of Prey film starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Variety notes McGregor is in talks to play infamous Batman villain Black Mask.

Black Mask has been a rumored villain among Warner Bros. and DC Films for quite a bit. His name first popped up around Gotham City Sirens with Suicide Squad director David Ayer teasing the villain. However, Gotham City Sirens appears to be on the back burner at Warner Bros. and rumors indicated he would show up in the Harley Quinn centric Birds of Prey film. It appears Black Mask is all but confirmed for Birds of Prey now!

Black Mask

Black Mask or Roman Sionis is one of Batman’s most ruthless villains leading the the False Face Society.

Black Mask

The character was created by Doug Moench and Tom Mandrake appearing in [easyazon_link identifier=”B004NGJL8E” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Batman #386[/easyazon_link]. He has an obsession with masks which started at a young age when he was bitten by a raccoon. He would take on the monikor the Black Mask after being struck by lightning while visiting his family’s crypt. He would carve a black mask out of his father’s casket and become the Black Mask.

The Birds of Prey

If McGregor becomes the Black Mask, he will join Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Rosie Perez as Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya.

Cassandra Cain is also expected to show up in the film, however the character has not yet been cast yet.

The Plot

A rumored plot indicates Harley Quinn will team up with Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya to rescue Cassandra Cain from Black Mask. If this plot rumor is true, it’s a different take on how we’ve seen Cassandra Cain and Harley Quinn.

I’m imagining something akin to [easyazon_link identifier=”B0026145WK” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Taken[/easyazon_link] where Black Mask might be running a child prostitution or slave labor ring, and the three heroes are determined to break it up and put a stop to Black Mask. It’s possible Harley joins them because she’s the potential in taking out a rival.

The film will be directed by Cathy Yan. It will be produced by Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless. It is expected to have an R-rating.

Birds of Prey is expected to hit theaters on February 7, 2020.
