The Weekly Top 5 – November 18, 2015

Huck Cover

This week sees a number of Star Wars comics as well as a new series, Huck, from Mark Millar and the long awaited Batman Europa from Matteo Casali and Brian Azzarello. What are your Top 5 this week?

Justin Wright

1. Batman Europa #1

Why: This four issue mininseries cowritten by Brian Azzarello with art by Jim Lee is going to feature Batman teaming up with the Joker to stop an incurable virus.

2. Huck #1

Why: Mark Millar and Rafael Albuquerque who each wrote 2 of my favorite time travel stories from last year (Chrononauts & EI8HT respectively) are creating a story about a superhero in hiding in a small town who is about to be exposed to the world.

3. Beauty #4

Why: An STD that makes you hot before it kills you. A cheating wife. One detective has a lot on his mind.

4. Phonogram: The Immaterial Girl #4/6

Why: Gillen & McKelvy (WICKED + DIVINE) are delivering a fun nostalgic sequel in their Phonogram series.

5. Clean Room #2

Why: Because the first issue actually scared me.

Jonathan Ngo

1. Huck #1

Why: I’ll always grab a new Mark Millar book. He can miss sometimes but he hits more often than not, and the idea of a superpowered but discreet, neighborly, friendly do-gooder suddenly being exposed is interesting enough to grab my attention. At this point, the always wonderful art by Raphael Albuquerque is just icing on the cake.

2. Star Wars Vader Down ONE SHOT

Why: The good thing with a one shot is that you know it have a good shot at being action packed and satisfying. Which should be enough, but it’s obviously better when you have Jason Aaron writing, and Darth Vader as the main character. I’m curious to see what the book will deliver.

3. Pretty Deadly #6

Why: It’s surprising to see Pretty Deadly come back after a 18 month without a new book. Sure DeConnick have been busy as hell writing plenty of good stuff, but it’s a bit unfair to deprive us from Emma Rios’s art for so long. Well, no more, they’re back and it’s all for the better. Grab the first trade if you don’t know Pretty Deadly, you wont regret it.

4. Ms. Marvel #1

Why: Ms. Marvel have been consistently good, and more often than not, great. Kamala is such a fun character to read, I really can’t miss the new series, there’s no reason for it not being as good as it used to be.

5. I Hate Fairyland #2

Why: The first issue was absolutely satisfying. Skottie Young delivered on all his promises and is clearly having a lot of fun on this book. Young’s art is a sure way to be filled with happiness, and him destroying cute pink things throughout the whole book is reasons enough to buy it.

John Trent

1. Batman Europa

Why: Batman travels around Europe trying to find a cure to a virus that has him beat. In order to survive he has to team up with the Joker! Sign me up.

2. Bloodshot Reborn #8

Why: Bloodshot continues his quest to hunt down the rest of the impostors who have been infected by the nanites, but trouble looms as his new girlfriend comes under attack from one of the impostors. Jeff Lemire has been killing it on this series.

3. Star Wars Vader Down ONE SHOT

Why: Vader takes on the entirety of the rebel alliance and shows the true power of the Dark Side. It will also be interesting to see how he deals with threats from within the Empire as well.

4. Wrath of the Eternal Warrior #1

Why: This book comes out of Valiant’s awesome event comic, Book of Death. We get to see what has happened to the Eternal Warrior and how he will cope and survive in his new environs.

5. Star Wars #12

Why: Luke will have to manage escaping a dangerous Hutt with presumably the help of Han, Leia, Chewie, and the rest of the crew. I am curious to see whether or not Luke Will he be able to learn anything of the Jedi in his escape.
