Marvel Announces POE DAMERON Comic Book Series

The greatest star pilot in the galaxy will be getting his own series in April. Star Wars: Poe Dameron will be written by Charles Soule with Phil Noto on art duties.
Charles Soule feels this is the perfect time for a Poe Dameron series. While he wasn’t one of the biggest characters on screen in The Force Awakens, he picked up a rabid fan base. “To see people reacting to him so strongly now just feels like we’re hopefully in a great position,” Soule says in a USA Today article announcing the series.
Phil Noto also recognized the popularity of the character, “I’ve seen people on Twitter and Instagram looking for Poe Dameron in the comics. Now the pressure’s on us to deliver.”
The comic hopes looks to flesh out the opening scene of The Force Awakens providing more clarity on Poe’s mission to seek out Lor San Tekka and find clues to the missing Luke Skywalker. The series also aims to examine Poe’s role within the Resistance and introduce a new villain who will become Poe’s main nemesis.
“Sometimes it can feel like the Star Wars universe is so well trodden and so many stories have already been told,” Soule explains. “But the way the Episode VII galaxy is set up, there are opportunities for new archetypes almost, and the bad guy we’re working with is going to feel fresh and cool.”
Soule and Noto also promise to really dig more into the character and explore his personality, something we only got hints of in The Force Awakens. BB-8 will also be taking on a prominent role in the series as he serves as Dameron’s asteromech droid. There will also be new X-wing pilots, legacy characters, and locations new and old.
“It’s not as instinctive in some ways as writing a story about, say, Lando Calrissian was for me – I’ve been thinking about Lando Calrissian for 30 years, whereas Poe Dameron I’ve been thinking about for six months.”
In order to capture the look of Poe Dameron, Noto has been studying Isaac’s filmography. “Seeing so much of him on screen, it’s easier in a way to act that part out in my head while I’m drawing: How would Oscar Isaac act in this situation as Poe Dameron?”
Soule aims to explore Dameron’s character through his background, which was revealed in Star Wars: The Shattered Empire. The series followed ace A-wing pilot Shara Bey as she met and interacted with all of the original trilogy cast aiding them on various missions. It also revealed that Bey married the Rebel marine Kes Dameron. It is inferred that these two are Poe’s parents.
“It’s silly not to explore the idea of a guy who grew up steeped in the Rebellion and the older Republic and all of those myths and legends,” Soule says. “If you think about it, he grew up the way we did, hearing all of these stories.”
Star Wars: Poe Dameron will be Soule’s third venture into the Star Wars universe following Lando and the current Obi-Wan & Anakin and is just the latest in Marvel’s ever-growing lineup of Star Wars comics which continue to top the charts in sales month in and month out.
