New Details on the Upcoming Star Trek TV series Revealed

It’s finally coming! CBS’s new Star Trek series will begin production this coming September according to Pop Goes The News. Along with the production schedule we have also learned this new series will take place after Next Generation although rumors swirl around whether or not the series will be a seasonal anthology.

“The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations,” reads a description from CBS, “while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

Production will take place in Toronto and while Star Trek Beyond is being filmed in Vancouver it appears at this point the new TV series will be unrelated to the movie continuity. In fact, CBS is required to leave six months between the theatrical release of Star Trek Beyond and the premiere of the television series.

This new series is being created by executive producer Bryan Fuller who cut his teeth as a writer on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. “It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand-new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman,” Fuller said in a press release last year, “and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.” Rod Roddenberry, the 42 year old son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry is also serving as an executive producer. He seems eager to fill his father’s shoes as Star Trek enters the 21st century.

The return of Star Trek to television is fantastic news and will be a boon for the franchise. It allows the series to excel in the medium where it fits best. With the series being set after Next Generation it will allow for a plethora of story options. There will be opportunities to explore the aftermath of the Dominion War, the death of the Borg Queen as well as the influence Admiral Janeway had on the timeline with her quest to bring the Voyager crew home. There are plenty of questions that have to be answered and even more that are just waiting to be asked.

Will we get to find out what happened to the Enterprise crew from Next Generation? Will the Borg return to the alpha quadrant for revenge? I bet the collective is still smarting from their last encounter with a Federation Captain. What about the Temporal War that was talkiedabout during Enterprise, will we see any of that? Could we see a set of group of Interstellar powers try to alter time? And finally, what about the Q. I can bet that a Q will be lurking in the shadows, just waiting to make their presence known to the new Star Trek crew.

One of the biggest questions outside of the actual story will be, who will be in the cast of the new show. It appears this will be a brand new cast and crew, but will we get to see cameos from past shows? I mean, there are Holodecks that can bring back fan favorites as the new crew looks to their elders for advice. We could also see Jonathan Frakes and Levar Burton, who directed past episodes return to direct even more.

The thing that makes Star Trek special is it’s flexible concept. It can tackle some of the most complex questions the human mind faces, as well as bring in alien of the week type episodes that continue to explore and expand on what the Star Trek universe looks like. It can take us to places where no man has gone before. What direction would you like to see the new series take? What storylines are you looking forward to revisiting?

[Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the new show would take place 50 years after Next Generation. We have since edited the story with more accurate information.]
