Marvel legend “Fabulous” Florence “Flo” Steinberg, who was one of the first two full-time employees at Marvel in the 1960s, passed away at the age of 78. She was critical in building up the Marvel following when the company was just starting out.
Fellow comics legend Larry Hama reported on her passing:
I am grieved to report that ‘Fabulous’ Flo Steinberg passed away this morning after complications from a brain aneurism and metastatic lung cancer. She will be interred at the Jewish cemetery in Kerhonkson NY. We are making plans for a memorial in September or October. I will update on this page.
Marvel Merry Marching Society
She started off as Stan Lee’s secretary dealing with ever-increasing amounts of fan mail as well as the Marvel Merry Marching Society memberships. Flo made the Marvel Merry Marching Society memberships her own personal project and worked on it for five years. She truly set the groundwork for Marvel’s connection with their fans.
After leaving Marvel and the comic industry altogether, she returned in 1975 to publish independent Big Apple Comix. While at Big Apple Comix she worked with other comic legends such as Neal Adams, Wally Wood, and Marie Severin. In the 1990s, she returned to Marvel and remained with the company the rest of her life working as a proofreader.
Marvel remembered “Fabulous Flo” as she “helped solidify the community that those comics inspired in its readers…it takes little imagination to draw a straight line from her attitude and commitment in those early days to the vast network of comic book fans that gather at conventions and online to talk about their love of the characters and stories of Marvel Comics.”
They also expressed their deepest condolences:
We are incredibly saddened to hear of Flo Steinberg’s passing and send our deepest condolences to her friends and family. Flo has always been the heart of Marvel and a legend in her own right. She will be forever missed and always loved by all of us here at Marvel.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Flo’s family and the entire Marvel family.
