Star Wars Han Solo Movie Taps ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Composer

How to Train Your Dragon composer John Powell will perform the score for the upcoming Star Wars Han Solo movie.

Lucasfilm announced the details earlier today.

Not only did Powell perform the score for How to Train Your Dragon, he’s also worked on Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and the Bourne series starring Matt Damon.

Powell earned an Academy Award nomination for his work on How to Train Your Dragon and will just be only the third composer to work on a Star Wars film. He joins long-time and legendary Star Wars composer John Williams and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story composer Michael Giacchino.

Lucasfilm notes that the “untitled Han Solo movie will be scored in the style of the original Star Wars movies but retain Powell’s distinctive voice.”

Take a listen to his work from How To Train Your Dragon:

The as of yet untitled Han Solo film is being directed by Ron Howard after Disney canned Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Scuttlebutt notes Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy fired Lord and Miller over a disagreement with their shooting style. Lord and Miller believed they were making a comedy film while Lucasfilm wanted them to add a comedic touch to a space fantasy.

Howard took over directing duties for the final three-and-a-half weeks of principal photography and is scheduled for five weeks of reshoots.

It stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo. Joining Ehrenreich are some big names including Woody Harrelson, Game Of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover who will portray a young Lando Calrissian, Westworld’s Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Joonas Suotamo.

The story will center around a young Han Solo and Chewbacca and their adventures in the Star Wars universe including Han Solo’s first meeting with fellow smuggler Lando Calrissian. The movie will take place prior to the original 1977 film.
