Deadpool Director Teases Fans With Possible Spider-Man Connection

Do you remember the Deadpool 2 teaser short that played just before the feature film Logan? The almost four minute short features Wade Wilson, out on a stroll when he just happens upon an old man being accosted by a mugger.

Actually, just to refresh your memory, take a look at the trailer:

Now, as Marvel fans like to do, they’ve managed to spread a number of theories on the internet regarding the identity of the old man. We like to make connections without any strong evidence to support it and voice our concerns on a forum or blog. A lot of it is wishful thinking, while some of it may be legitimate teases by the writers and directors. One of the most notable ones is that the old man is actually Ben Parker.

That’s right. Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben.

They point to obscure details in the trailer like the old man buying a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream as evidence.

Fast forward to an interview many months later with Deadpool 2 director David Leitch. He was asked by the Huffington Post about this theory roaming the interwebs. Instead of shutting the rumors down, he just poured more fuel on the fire.

Interesting. That’s a really interesting question. I think that people should continue to theorize who that old man was.

The bro-mance between Deadpool and Spider-Man is one of comic book legend. Also that David Leitch is entertaining this idea has many Marvel comic fans wetting themselves in anticipation.

This is all on top of the fact that given that just this last year, there was an effort by the creative team behind the first Deadpool movie to bridge the gap between the Fox and Sony franchises. Director Tim Miller and Producer Simon Kinberg actually got in contact with Kevin Feige about the possibility of having Wade Wilson share screens with the webslinger. Kinberg expressed quite a bit of excitement about the prospect of getting these two in the same movie.

With all of the deals that have recently started happening, we asked if they could get visitation rights to Sony’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. I would love to see it. Both of us are close with Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ’cause we’d would love to see it.

However at the end of the day, it all just seems like wishful thinking from the Marvel fan community.  Yet if Kinberg and Leitch are able to take us on a crazy ride with theories with just a Deadpool short, then we can expect a crazier rollercoaster when the movie does come out in summer next year.

Deadpool 2 will be in theaters on June 1, 2018.
