Marvel Looks To Explore More Of The Cosmic Universe With Richard Rider’s Nova!

Marvel has more in store for writer and director James Gunn. Gunn will be returning to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and he’s an executive producer for Avengers: Infinity War.

If that isn’t enough, he will also be on board to help plan out the long term future for the cinematic universe when it comes to the cosmic side of things. According to Gunn, it will be at least ten to twenty years worth of content!

One piece of the Marvel cosmic universe Gunn hopes to adapt is Nova, aka Richard Rider. In a Facebook Q&A, Gunn mentioned this and more:

Yes, definitely. Nova comes up occasionally as someone we might use. One of the things I’m doing with creating Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – that will take place after the next two Avengers movies – and it will help to setup the next 10-20 years of Marvel movies. It’s going to really expand the cosmic universe. We’re going to be setting up new characters. It will be the last movie of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy.

While Richard Rider’s character wasn’t specifically introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy, the Nova Corps were. They were the peace officers flying around in the advanced space ships that eventually band together to form a shield to stop Ronan from reaching the planet’s surface.

In the comics, the Nova Corps are an advanced intergalactic police force that are powered by the Nova Force. The Nova Force is created by a living computer known as the Xandarian Worldmind. The Nova Force allows individual members of the Nova Corps to gain superhuman strength, speed, reflexes and perception. They also can travel faster than light and wield energy powers. Nova Corps members can also gain enemy profiles and analyze weaknesses by accessing the Xandarian Worldmind.

Nova

The most famous Richard Rider story in the comics was created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Their Richard Rider stories spanned from 2006 to 2011 and are referred to as DnA by fans. The story saw Nova Prime as the last surviving member of his race. In fact, it was during this run that Abnett and Lanning also launched the version of the Guardians of the Galaxy led by Peter Quill that inspired Gunn’s films. Abnett and Lanning returned to the Guardians to work on the tie-in comic for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Even though Richard Rider was not in Guardians of the Galaxy, neither were the Nova Corps from the comics. It’s possible Gunn might introduce the Xandarian Worldmind in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or we might see its introduction in Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers. Maybe one of the Infinity Stones brings it to life. This could then generate the Nova Force required to power the Nova Corps we all know and love from the comics. It will be interesting to see how Marvel Studios boss/planner Kevin Feige and James Gunn will bring about Richard Rider’s Nova.

How do you think they will introduce Richard Rider? What are your theories?
