Amazon Gives The Green Light For Garth Ennis’ The Boys Adaptation

Amazon continues to increase its original content engine by giving the green light to Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s The Boys adaptation.

Amazon officially ordered a script that is expected to be written by Supernatural and Timeless creator Eric Kripke. Along with Kripke the series will be executive produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It is expected to be an hour-long drama. The show was initially slated to head to Cinemax.

Variety reports the series may get a “straight-to-series pickup.”

Rogen and Goldberg are no strangers to Garth Ennis’ comic book work. The pair worked to bring Ennis’ Preacher comics to AMC. In fact the two teamed up to direct the first two episodes of both Season 1 and Season 2.

The Boys live-action adaptation has been in the works for a while now. Back in 2010 Anchorman director Adam McKay developed a film adaptation and shopped it to Columbia and Paramount. Then Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay wrote a script, but the movie couldn’t find its sweet spot as a movie.

The Boys was originally published by Wildstorm in 2006 before moving to Dynamite Entertainment. The series ran a total of 72 issues ending in November 2012. However, Ennis continued the story in a spin-off miniseries, Herogasm, with artists John McCrea and Keith Burns.

It featured a superpowered CIA hit squad known as “The Boys” who monitored the superhero community. The superhero community began engaging in wild and reckless behavior after becoming corrupted with their celebrity status. “The Boys” were formed to keep them in check.

“The Boys” consist of 7 superpowered agents. They include Billy Butcher, Hughie Campbell, Mother’s Milk, The Frenchman, The Female, Lieutenant Colonel Greg D. Mallory, and The Legend. The series was known for its graphic and brutal violence and sexuality.
