Director James Gunn Teases Rocket Raccoon’s Horrible Origin Story!

We got a glimpse of Rocket Racoon’s dark past in Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, director James Gunn revealed Rocket’s origin story will be fully fleshed out in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket gave us a brief glimpse into his nightmare origin when he got into a drunk fight with Drax. “I didn’t ask to get made. I didn’t ask to be torn apart and put back together over and over and turned into some, some little monster.”

According to Gunn, the tale will be “more horrible” than what is seen in the comic books. During a panel as The Hasbro HasCon Gunn elaborated:

We are going to learn more about where Rocket comes from in the coming sagas. It’s going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It’s a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it.

We know in the comics Rocket was heavily experimented on as well as engineered to be a minder for the inmates of an abandoned Halfworld colony. It’ll be interesting to see just what kind of “horrible” James Gunn has in mind for Rocket’s MCU origin.

Marvel also introduced a Rocket Origins on Disney XD that showed his experimentation on Halfworld and his first encounter with Groot.

I’m not sure how Rocket’s origin could fit in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, but I could see it as something to be looked at in the next phase of the MCU. We know Marvel is planning to further expand into the cosmic universe with the Captain Marvel movie introducing the Skrulls. Gunn also teased the possible introduction of Nova late last month.

Are you excited to get to learn more about Rocket in the future? I know I am!
