Marvel’s Tom Brevoort: No More DC/Marvel Crossovers

Marvel’s Senior Vice President of Publishing and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort explained it is “very unlikely” to see any DC/Marvel crossovers any time soon.

Just before Marvel kicked off their Black Panther panel at Baltimore Comic Con on Sunday, Tom Brevoort took a couple questions from fans. One of those questions came from a fan who described a potential Hulk and Green Lantern crossover with Hulk obtaining a Red Lantern ring.

Brevoort crushed the fan’s hope of ever seeing the story come to life in comics when he stated there wouldn’t be any DC/Marvel crossovers in the future.

He explained both companies are not interested in putting resources into the other company’s property. He gave an example of a potential Avengers/Justice League crossover and why Marvel would not want to promote Justice League in their comics especially when Warner Bros. and DC Comics have a big movie coming out.

He also emphasized that with a potential DC/Marvel crossover, Marvel would have to give half of the profits to DC and vice versa. Brevoort exclaimed, “I want all the money.” From a business perspective that makes complete sense. Why would Marvel want to split profits with DC? One reason could be an interesting story that fans would love.

However, Brevoort foresaw this potential reasoning and was ready with an answer referencing past DC/Marvel crossovers, “None of them are anyone’s favorite story.” He further elaborated, “What happens in your head is better than what’s done on the page.”

Interestingly enough, Brevoort did mention that if we asked someone from DC, they would have a similar answer. I’m not so sure if that is the case. DC Comics has been working with a bunch of publishers over the past few years giving us fantastic crossovers. In fact, the crossovers have been so successful they are working on even more.

Some of those crossovers include Star Trek and Green Lantern with IDW which is currently on its second volume. DC is also working with IDW for a newly announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover with Batman. Not only is DC working with IDW, but they are also working with Dynamite Entertainment for two crossovers featuring The Shadow and Batman. They also have a Wonder Woman ’77 Meets Bionic Woman crossover.

IDW and Dynamite aren’t the only comic book publishers DC is working with. They are teaming up with Archie Comics for a Harley & Ivy Meet Betty & Veronica miniseriesDC Comics also teamed up with BOOM! Studios for a Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern crossover as well as a Justice League/Power Rangers crossover. It definitely looks like DC Comics is open to working on crossovers with a number of comic book publishers. Whether they would work with Marvel is another question.

Finally, Brevoort concluded it would have to be “pretty dire [for Marvel] to do [crossovers with DC] again.” I’m not sure what it takes to be “pretty dire” but it doesn’t look like it will be happening any time soon especially with the strength of Disney behind Marvel Comics.
