Report: Deathstroke Movie In The Works With Joe Manganiello

Deathstroke

Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke might no longer be the main villain in the upcoming The Batman movie, but it appears he will headline his own film.

In a new report from The Wrap, Manganiello is expected to star with The Raid director Gareth Evans tapped to write and direct.

Manganiello had originally been tapped to star as Deathstroke in The Batman movie when Ben Affleck was on board to direct. However, once DC tapped Matt Reeves to take over the project it appeared Manganiello would be departing as well. Reeves would be bringing his own script. Many rumored Affleck would also be out as Batman, however those rumors seem to have been squashed for now. We got a peek of what Manganiello’s Deathstroke would have looked like in The Batman.

DC previously passed on Evans directing Justice League Dark, but gave him the nod to move forward with the Deathstroke spin-off film.

Evans is known for his martial arts films The Raid: Redemption and its sequel Raid 2. He will definitely bring a ton of action to the film.

It’s unclear if this new Deathstroke movie will be directly connected to Justice League. If we can take DC’s Geoff Johns‘ word it’s more than likely not to connect to every movie.

Talking about the upcoming Aquaman film, Johns said:

Some of the movies do connect the characters together, like Justice League. But, like with Aquaman…our goal is not to connect Aquaman to every movie.

My own theory is Johns and DC will employ the 52 Universe theory that allows them to explore different Earths with different versions of DC’s stable of characters on their respective Earths. This would allow them to have a Joker origin story without Jared Leto, but also keep Leto’s Joker going with his own new stories. It also explains why we see Robin Wright’s Antiope in the Justice League trailers. She definitely died in Wonder Woman.

Deathstroke

Deathstroke has been a mainstay character in the DC Universe since he first burst onto the scene in The New Teen Titans #2 by Marv Wolfman and George Perez back in 1980. Deathstroke would become the greatest assassin in the DC Universe. However, he was originally meant to be a one-off villain for the Teen Titans. Fortunately, his popularity turned him into one of the Titans’ most dangerous adversaries.

In just 11 years, Deathstroke’s popularity would see him come face to face with Batman in the four-part City of Assassins series. Deathstroke even defeats Batman in combat. However, the two eventually team-up to hunt down an assassin who killed one of Commissioner Gordon’s men.

In DC’s latest Rebirth comic line, Deathstroke has his own title. His ruthless mercenary behavior is front and center as he moves from one contract to another.

Deathstroke played by Manu Bennet has also become a fan favorite on Arrow!
