The Punisher Showrunner Teases Nasty, Brutal Villain For Season 2!

Barracuda

Netflix’s The Punisher so far has seen some pretty positive fan reaction. The show currently has a 94% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to a lackluster 61% from the critics, but who really cares about their opinions anyway? After the final episode, there’s already buzz about a second season and The Punisher showrunner Steven Lightfoot is leading the charge. In fact, he already has an idea about a particularly nasty villain he wants to introduce in Season 2.

While having a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Steven Lightfoot talked about some comic book characters that he would like to see added if Season Two gets the green light. If his choice of villain becomes reality, it seems that the realistic violence portrayed on the show is only going to be turned up a notch.

I haven’t even thought about season two … but one of the villains I love is Barracuda [from Garth Ennis’ Punisher MAX series]. I think he’s great fun. I also really like O’Brien [also introduced in Ennis’ Punisher MAX run]. I thought she was always really cool. Certainly, those two jump out at me initially, but there are so many great characters there. It’s a very fun sandbox to play in.

Many of you might recognize the name Barracuda. He’s one of the most violent characters to grace the pages of Marvel Comics. During Garth Ennis’ Punisher MAX run, he was not only one of the main bad guys, but one of the most iconic. Barracuda is a former military man himself like Frank Castle. But unlike Castle, he turned to mercenary worked, which in turn helped to mold him as one of the cruelest killing machines the Punisher has had to face.

If Steven Lightfoot gets his way, and it’s more than likely he will, he is the showrunner after all, Barracuda will end up as a primary villain in Season Two. We can expect that the levels of action, violence, and death will only increase on the show. I mean he’s pulling from Ennis’ Punisher MAX. One of my favorite scenes from Ennis’ run is when Frank walks into a mob boss’ mansion. He casually strolls in and executes him on his 100th birthday in front of most of the mob. Frank then casually walks outside, hops over a wall, picks up a .50 caliber automatic weapon, and just straight mows down the mob as they try to kill him. It’s brutally epic.

As we saw in this first season the violence is very real. It’s spectacular and horrifying at the same time. For example, we saw Frank Castle in Afghanistan “cleaning” out a building of combatants. You can see the bloodlust take over him as singlehandedly eliminates dozens of enemies. The way they filmed this scene it draws you in. You can almost become Frank and feel his bloodlust washing over you. This use of camera work and storyline lays out what we can expect of the Punisher in the future and Barracuda fits right in.
