Warner Bros. revealed their upcoming DC Extended Universe film slate down in Sao Paulo, Brazil at Comic Con Experience 2017.
The slate consists of a number of films that are no surprise. They include a Wonder Woman sequel, Aquaman, Flashpoint, Suicide Squad 2, Shazam, and The Batman.
There were also some surprises including Batgirl, Green Lantern Corps, and Justice League Dark.
Justice League Dark might be the biggest surprise because it’s already had so much trouble. Guillermo del Toro was originally attached to the project, but he left when it conflicted with the Pacific Rim sequel. Warner Bros. then secured Doug Liman. However, he left when the script didn’t live up to his expectation. While Warner Bros. worked on reworking the script, they continue to search for a director.
The Green Lantern Corps is in almost the same situation as Justice League Dark. It does not have a director attached. However, it does have Batman Begins and Man of Steel scribe David Goyer working on a script with Justin Rhodes. There are rumors Goyer may take up the director’s position while another indicates Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt is attached to the project. The movie is also supposed to be a Lethal Weapon in space with John Stewart and Hal Jordan.
As for the Batgirl movie, Joss Whedon is still attached to the project and is currently working on a script.
But what might be more surprising are the films that are left out. There is no Cyborg, Deathstroke, Gotham City Sirens, Joker & Harley Quinn, the newly announced solo Harley Quinn project, Nightwing, and the Joker origin movie supposedly being produced by Martin Scorsese.
Margot Robbie recently made headlines revealing she has been working on a solo Harley Quinn project for almost two years. While Suicide Squad didn’t live up to many expectations, Margot Robbie was widely praised for her role as Harley Quinn. It’s surprising Warner Bros. isn’t trying to jump-start a Harley Quinn franchise as soon as possible to capitalize on Robbie’s popular performance.
Maybe the most surprising is that Deathstroke was not officially announced. Warner Bros. surprised everyone in the post-credit scene in Justice League. Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke made his first official appearance in the DCEU as he pondered teaming up with a newly freed Lex Luthor to form their own “league.”
Aquaman comes to theaters on December 21, 2018. The film is directed by James Wan. It stars Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Amber Heard as Mera, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, and Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko.
Are you surprised about the films Warner Bros. unveiled? Do you like the direction they are taking? Or would you like to see them move in a different direction?
