Report: Black Panther to Beat Justice League’s Box Office Opening

Black Panther

Marvel’s upcoming Black Panther film may be the first big blockbuster of 2018 and it’s opening weekend may beat out competitor Justice League.

A new report from BoxOffice.com says Black Panther could open up to $100 million+ weekend.

Justice League raked in $93 million domestically on its opening weekend just before Thanksgiving. It was the weakest performance of any of the recent DC Films including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman.

In a previous report BoxOffice.com blamed poor word of mouth primarily from critic scores on Rotten Tomatoes as well as competition from Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok which debuted just three weeks before Justice League. In fact, in Thor: Ragnarok’s third weekend its screen count was on par with Justice League.

In contrast, Black Panther isn’t expected to face any stiff competition until March 2018. It also opens on Presidents Day weekend which should allow families to “boost attendance on Sunday.”

Another benefit for Black Panther is director Ryan Coogler. Coogler is coming off the success of Creed and could work some big budget magic in Black Panther.

The character also debuted in Captain America: Civil War to a warm reception. Not only was he well received, but it gave general audiences an introduction to the character who might’ve been previously unaware of him.

While everything seems to be aligning, BoxOffice.com does indicate “social media buzz hasn’t reached the levels of Wonder Woman.”

Black Panther stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue/Klaw, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Wintson Duke as M’Baku, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross.

Black Panther comes to theaters on February 16, 2018.
