Star Wars: A New Hope Actor Dead at 87

Alfie Curtis

Star Wars: A New Hope actor Alfie Curtis died on December 26 at the age of 87.

Curtis played Dr. Evazan in Star Wars: A New Hope. You might remember him when he threatened Luke Skywalker at Mos Eisley Cantina saying, “He doesn’t like you. I don’t like you either. Just watch yourself. We are wanted men. I have the death sentence on 12 systems. You’ll be dead.”

Curtis’ Dr. Evazan is then killed by Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi after he throws Luke across the bar.

Dr. Evazan was a plastic surgeon who ended up endangering his patients and led to him becoming a wanted man. In an encounter with a bounty hunter he received a taste of his own medicine and was permanently disfigured. Fortunately, Ponda Baba intervened and saved him. The two would then team up as a smuggling team working for Jabba the Hutt. While Curtis’ character first appeared in A New Hope, Evazan would later appear in Rogue One on Jedha.

Mark Hamill remembered Alfie on Twitter saying, Alfie Curtis made the #StarWars Mos Eisley Cantina scene (one of the most memorable I’ve ever been a part of) even MORE memorable. As horrific as he was on-camera, off-camera he was funny, kind & a real gentleman. Thanks Alf- you’ll be missed. #RIP –❤️– mh

Curtis was born on July 28, 1930 in Stepney, London, England. Aside from his role in Star Wars: A New Hope, he had roles in The Elephant Man, Cribb, and Q.E.D.

Curtis’s death comes exactly one year after Carrie Fisher died at the age of 60 in December 2016.

Alfie Curtis’ cause of death has not been confirmed, but was originally reported by Jedi News.
