The Punisher’s Jon Bernthal Sends a Message to Alt-Right Supporters

Jon Bernthal sat down with Esquire magazine to discuss the ultra-violent anti-hero he plays in Netflix’s The Punisher.

Bernthal plays Marine veteran Frank Castle who seeks revenge on the people who murdered his loving wife and two children. He does so with the help of Micro played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The two take on corrupt government officials in order to find justice for the death of Castle’s family and bring to light a massive cover-up by one of the top CIA officials.

During the interview, Jon Bernthal opened up about being a gun owner, “I’m a gun owner. I have a gun in my house to keep my family safe. I’m trained in that gun’s use. I know how to keep it away from my kids, and I know how to use it if I need to.”

However, he did say that he thinks certain people shouldn’t be allowed to own guns. He specifically referenced Devin Patrick Kelley, who gunned down 26 people at First Baptist Church in rural Sutherland Springs, Texas.

“Should there be a way that a guy with mental issues like the asshole in Texas can’t get guns? Absolutely. We have to have a dialogue, and that’s not happening,” Benrthal noted.

Esquire’s Stephen Rodrick then pressed Bernthal on what he thought about people using the Punisher’s logo in warzones in Iraq, on biker jackets, and “on the shoulders of alt-right protestors at the white supremacy rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.”

Bernthal replied, “I feel honored to play a guy who people putting their life on the line identify with.” When Rodrick pressed him on the alt-righters, Bernthal simply said, “F*** them.”
