Chris Hemsworth has been playing Thor since 2011, almost a decade! He starred in three Thor solo films and two Avengers films with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 coming up. However, after Avengers 4, Hemsworth revealed his contract with Marvel Studios is up.

He spoke with USA Today confirming the end of his contract.

“Contractually, right now — yeah, this is it. I’m done. I won’t be playing the character again.”

However, since he’s been playing the part for the better part of a decade there’s definitely some anxiety about potentially ending his role as the God of Thunder.

“It’s sort of a scary thought. This really seemed like this never-ending thing. And now it’s potentially finishing.”

While Hemsworth’s contract is technically up, Thor: Ragnarok reinvigorated Hemsworth’s desire to continue playing Thor. He celebrated the New Year with director Taika Waititi and revealed they were already mulling a possible Thor 4.

“We gave cheers … a few times. To Thor 3, but it also was like, ‘What could we do with four? We could do this and this.’ We were throwing ideas around.”

Hemsworth even talks about how Thor: Ragnarok reinvented Thor and brought the character to a bigger platform.

I felt like we re-invented him. There is a bigger platform now to continue if we want to.

And he’s not kidding. Thor: Ragnarok was the 7th highest grossing film in the United States in 2017 bringing in upwards of $313 million. It would eventually earn more than $850 million worldwide.

And if you are hoping Hemsworth will be able to resign with Marvel Studios for a Thor 4, Hemsworth revealed some interesting news. He’s actually spoken with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige about the possibility.

(Feige) said, ‘Look, we just have to concentrate on (Avengers) now. So who knows? There are 76 cast members in these two Avengers films. They will be the biggest films of all time, far bigger than my character. It’s a conversation for further down the road, if it was going to happen.”

While Hemsworth had Thor 4 on his mind while filming parts of the upcoming Avengers movies, he is looking forward to a break after his upcoming film 12 Strong comes out.

“I want to slow down for a minute and make some decision on a rested brain.”
