Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson opened up to fans in an interview with the AV Club. One of the most noticeable tidbits is the fact we’re going to have the chance to see Nick Fury minus the eyepatch!

Check out the comment below:

“We’re going back now, and I meet Captain Marvel in more of an origin story. You’ll see Nick Fury with another guy’s face, somebody that’s got two eyes, so that’s a whole big deal. You’ll see. It’s prior to the eye injury, no eye patch.”

Jackson is referring to the fact that Captain Marvel will take place in the 1990s. Nick Fury first hinted at the reason for the loss of his eye in Captain America: Winter Solder. He claimed it was a result of “misplaced trust.” Seeing a 90s Nick Fury in charge of S.H.I.E.D. could also provide the opportunity to expand a bit of the agency relationship with Stark Industries, and other groups.

But what might be more intriguing is he says we will “see Nick Fury with another guy’s face.” While it could mean we will just see Fury without the scar and the eyepatch and two functioning eyes, I’m wondering if this is actually hinting that Nick Fury could be a Skrull. We know the Skrulls are shapeshifters so having another person’s face would make sense if he was one. The Skrulls will also be the villains in Captain Marvel.

Jackson also talks about where it was the first time he saw Nick Fury.

“Yeah. The first time I saw Nick Fury was in the comic books, at Golden Apple [Comics]. Mark Millar. Mark Millar, genius. Yeah. [Millar re-imagined Nick Fury in Jackson’s likeness in 2002 for The Ultimates, predating Jackson’s casting in the MCU]”

I remember when I first got my hands on Ultimate Avengers many many years ago and said “wow this kinda looks like Samuel L Jackson. It wasn’t until many years later I learned about the story behind the use of likeness.

Jackson also elaborated on what Nick Fury’s role is in the MCU, “I’m sort of the glue that holds all these guys together. I got them into the organization, into S.H.I.E.L.D., and every now and then I show up to remind them that S.H.I.E.L.D. has a purpose. It’s been a good job. It was a nine-picture deal. I did it. It was good.”

It definitely looks like we will get to see how Fury’s trust was misplaced. And I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a Skrull in disguise.

Samuel L. Jackson has been a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since he first popped up in the after credits scene of Iron Man back in 2008. I wouldn’t be surprised if he shows up in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4.

Captain Marvel is set for a March 8th, 2019 release. Then we’ll see a Nick Fury minus the eye patch. The movie stars Brie Larson as the title character, Captain Marvel. She will be joined by Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, and of course Samuel L. Jackson.
