Cable: 5 Fast Facts to Get You Prepared for Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2 is coming to a theater near you fast. It’s time to get to know some of the central characters in the film. Today we’re going to look at some facts about the mutant called Nathan Summers or you might know him as Cable. If you’re just getting into comics, then the story of Cable can be a bit complex. It’s one that spans both time and space with a sprinkle of clones. Sit back and enjoy these five fast facts on Cable so you’re all caught up for the upcoming Deadpool 2 movie.
1. Cable Comes from ONE Possible Future
You read that correctly. Cable comes from a single possible future, so that makes him a time traveler. But the story isn’t that simple. See he wasn’t born in the future, he was just sent to the future for his own protection. A well known villain in the X-Men world, Mr. Sinister, was hoping to use the baby against the all-powerful Apocalypse. Mr. Sinister’s hopes were dashed as Apocalypse learned of this plan and took custody of the child himself. To ensure that Cable wouldn’t be a threat to him, he injected the baby with a “Techno-Organic Virus.” This weapon converts your tissue into cybernetic metal. But thankfully another mutant named Askani was able to save him from Apocalypse before the virus was able to finish its job. Though Cable was left permanently scarred. This is where the future comes into play. Askani takes the child 2000 years into the future in order to save him from the virus that was still eating away at Cable’s organic body. He was left in that future well into his adulthood until his return to the present.
2. Cable is the Son of X-Men Team Leader Cyclops and the Clone of Jean Grey
Cable has an interesting patronage. His father is one of the most well-known mutants in the world and X-Men Team leader Scott Summers or Cyclops. And as for his mother, well her name is Madelyne Pryor. She is the clone of famed X-Men Jean Grey. Again, thanks to Mr. Sinister’s interest in both Jean Grey and Scott Summers, Cable came to be. In Uncanny X-Men #240 (1989) it came out that the then wife of Scott Summers, Madelyne Pryor, had indeed been a clone of Jean Crey. Mr. Sinister implanted Jean Grey’s memories and got her a job with his family’s business in order to work on his breeding program, which resulted in the birth of Cable.
3. Cable Can Time Travel
In the pages of Uncanny X-Men #321 Beast reveals that Cable has latent time-traveling abilities. And they are going to be put to good use as Charles Xavier’s son Legion has traveled back in time and successfully altered the time line and are beginning to create a tear in the fabric of reality. With the aid of a Shi’ar engineering project and Charles Xavier’s telepathy, Cable is sent back in time to warn Storm, Bishop, Psylocke, and Iceman about Legion’s plans.
4. Cable Almost Took Out The Avengers…By Himself.
Cable’s main mission most of the time has always been concerned with preventing a future like the one he came from. In order to do this, the life of Hope Summers was to be protected at all costs. And how do the Avengers fit into all of this? Well, it seems that she dies in an accident caused by the Avengers. This was a story in Avengers: X-Sanction. It was a time when most felt that the Avengers had members on their roster that were nearly undefeatable. The team included members like Red Hulk, Captain America, and Iron Man. Cable, in an angered state, was able to rip right through them as his mission was to protect Hope. If it wasn’t for the Red Hulk’s intervention Captain America, Falcon, and Iron Man would have been defeated. In the end, it took the combined efforts of the Avengers, Scott Summers aka Cycplos, and Hope Summers to keep Cable from ending the Avengers once and for all.
5. Cable has Unwanted Telepathic Abilities
As an Alpha level mutant Cable is quite powerful, now add in the fact he is telepathic you have another level of “nope.” His powers come from his mother who is, of course, the clone of a powerful telepath. In the comics, he does his best to fight off what he hears, but it is implied that he can hear each and every person on Earth. I don’t know about you but that seems to be something that would get very old, very quickly for me.
6. Bonus Fact: Cable Takes a Cue from Deadpool and Breaks the Fourth Wall!
In Issue 11 of Cable & Deadpool series. We see Cable take a cue from Deadpool and narrates past of events in the previous issue for the reader. Before, it was wade in the series reca[[ing events for the reader, but in this issue, cable takes a turn at it. This is something that I really hope we see in the upcoming Deadpool 2 movie. If they can make this happen I’d be a happy camper!
Well, there you have it. Some good insight on the character of Cable. Not only is he a complex character with a great deal of history, but he has had some amazing story arcs in the comics that I’d recommend for sure. If you want to just jump right into it I’d recommend the above mentioned Deadpool and Cable set. I have my own copy and I’ve found it to be a fun story. Then if you want another team up comic give Gambit and Wolverine a try. You never know we might see them share the screen in a possible future!
