Scarlett Johansson Hints at Captain America and the Secret Avengers

Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow has been one of the longest standing characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She first debuted in Iron Man 2 and has been a mainstay ever since appearing in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Captain America: Civil War. She will obviously be starring in Avengers: Infinity War as well as the untitled fourth Avengers film.

Johansson might also appear in a Black Widow solo film, but it’s possible she might even appear in more movies than that. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Scarlett Johansson talks about what Black Widow has been up to since the events of Captain America: Civil War. At about the :16 second mark Johansson hints at a possible Secret Avengers story.

Scarlett Johansson reveals, “When we last saw these characters in Civil War, it’s been probably two or three years that have passed. And our characters have been part of some counter-terrorism efforts. But we’re flying under the radar. And you know it’s a lot when you are on these kind of missions with no governmental support and you don’t really have the support even just the general public. You are sort of running rogue, you know, trying to do what you know is best for the common man. But you don’t have someone to guide you or like I said support you. We are kind of fractured ourselves.” Johansson then goes on to talk about the Hulk, “The last we saw Hulk he was floating into the stratosphere. Now, we are reintroduced to this whole expanded universe. There’s been a lot of change that’s gone on since the original Avengers assembled.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a potential Secret Avengers storyline hinted at. A recent character bio for Captain America also hinted the Secret Avengers could be a thing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the comics, Captain America led a team of Secret Avengers that would take on missions the main Avengers line-up could not do as public figures. The team would include Valkyrie, Black Widow, Beast, Sharon Carter, Moon Knight, Ant-Man, Nova, and War Machine. We’ve already seen Captain America, Black Widow, Ant-Man, and Sharon Carter operating together in Captain America: Civil War. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to see these characters working together on clandestine missions outside of the Sokovia Accords.

What do you think? Is Scarlett Johansson hinting at the possibility of a Secret Avengers storyline? Could Marvel Studios pull one out of the hat like Lucasfilm and give us an anthology film with the Secret Avengers?
