Avengers: Infinity War Director Reveals the Strength of Thanos

Thanos

Avengers: Infinity War is just over a month away from taking the world by storm and we continue to learn more and more about the upcoming movie.

The latest details revolve around Marvel’s big bad who has been hanging in the background of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since he first smiled at audiences in the post-credit scenes of The Avengers.

In Empire Magazine’s big cover story, Avengers: Infinity War director Joe Russo reveals quite a bit about Thanos.

“He’s strong than the Hulk. He’s more like Genghis Khan. He’s a force of nature. He has a spiritual wisdom well beyond all the other characters. He is a conqueror of worlds. He doesn’t have a weakness, and that’s what makes him so threatening.”

That’s quite a bit to swallow. My first reaction is we won’t be seeing Hulk smash any puny gods in this movie. In fact, he might be the one getting smashed.

The comparison to Genghis Khan is also extremely interesting. If you are unfamiliar with Genghis Khan he was the founder and leader of the Mongol Empire which would eventually become the largest contiguous empire in history. He united a number of nomadic tribes in northeast Asia and then launched  the Mongol invasions that would claim most of Eurasia. During his lifetime he would see the Mongol Empire control China and much of Central Asia. At the time of his death the Empire stretched from the Caspian Sea to the Sea of Japan.

Not only did Genghis Khan build the Mongol Empire, but he did so in a vicious manner. After conquering territory he would exterminate the civilian populations. It’s definitely something that Thanos appears to have in common with him given Thanos’ appetite to destroy Xandar for Ronan in Guardians of the Galaxy.

But maybe the most powerful thing to come out of Joe Russo’s quote is that he says Thanos “doesn’t have a weakness.” How in the world are the Avengers and their superhero allies going to defeat the Mad Titan who doesn’t have a weakness?

We’ll have to find out in Avengers: Infinity War when the film hits theaters on April 27, 2018.
