The Father of Blockbusters is Coming to DC

The Father of Blockbusters is making a DC Comics film! In a press release, Warner Bros. announced they will be re-teaming with their Ready Player One collaborator Steven Spielberg on a Blackhawk film! As of right now, he’s only slated as a producer on the project, but he may end up directing. One of Spielberg’s most trusted screenwriters, David Koepp, is currently working on the script. You might remember Koepp from Jurassic Park, Mission Impossible, and War of the Worlds.

This is the perfect project for Spielberg to tackle. While there weren’t many fans clamoring for a Blackhawk film, they’re a unique part of the DC Universe that has yet to be explored. The characters were some of the most popular in comics in the 1940’s and 50’s. In fact, Blackhawk is exactly the kind of comic that influenced George Lucas to create Indiana Jones in the first place.

The kind of adventurers who go on fantastical adventures and face some of the most evil and dastardly foes in the known world. Now, the team is going to be brought into the new century by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.

No one expected Steven Spielberg to enter the comic book movie game, despite being one of its biggest influences. His works have inspired countless comics throughout the years. Now, he may not be trying to tackle a superhero, but he he’s placing some attention on the comic world. Maybe Ready Player One helped Spielberg to appreciate everything geek. One can only hope.

A Perfect Fit

Spielberg really is the perfect filmmaker to bring this team to life. Not only is he a fan of the time period, but his appreciation for practical effects and stunts helped make Indiana Jones one of the best action film franchises of all time. Every stunt looks perfect, every fight looks brutal. That’s exactly what fans will expect from a superhero-themed fighter pilot film. It doesn’t hurt that this DC Comics film will have the Amblin name attached.

Amblin Entertainment is an incredible production company. To have them partner with Warner Bros. on a DC project is out of this world! Not to mention the subject matter that the Blackhawk film will tackle: World War II. In case you didn’t remember, between Indiana Jones and Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg knows a thing or two about period films set in World War II. If this film ends up seeing the light of day, it will most likely be one of the most unique and well-made comic book fans of all time.

Blackhawk is the leader of the Blackhawks or Blackhawk Squadron. The group usually contains seven members and operate out of Blackhawk Island. They are ace World War II era pilots. They normally fly Grumman XF5F Skyrocket planes. In the beginning of their comic book run in the 1940s the Squadron would predominantly face down the Axis powers of Germany, Italy, and Japan. However, they would go on to face colorful foes like King Condor and Killer Shark. They would also face down insane war machines like shark planes and flying tanks.

More recently in the comics the Blackhawks returned in Dark Nights: Metal #1 with Kendra Saunders being introduced as Lady Blackhawk. She is the leader of the team whose new mission is to prevent the DC Universe from being consumed by the Dark Multiverse and the dark god known as Barbatos.

The Academy Award-winning director had this to say about the project, “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.”

Steven Spielberg is currently hard at work on his version of West Side Story. Oh, and let’s not forget Spielberg is also working on an Indiana Jones revival. Hopefully, Blackhawk will follow soon after.
