The Equalizer 2 Director Talks Potential Morbius Movie at Sony

Antoine Fuqua

On the heels of the second Venom trailer, Equalizer 2 director Antoine Fuqua revealed he had been approached by Sony, the studio behind Equalizer 2, to direct a Morbius movie.

Fuqua spoke to JoBlo while at CinemaCon:

“As a kid I grew up with comic books. They talked to me about Black Panther years ago, way back in the day. There’s some reason they came up and they talked to me about at Sony, a Marvel character, Morbius [The Living Vampire]…that kinda came up. I don’t know, I have a thirteen-year-old son so I’m watching more of that again and it’s exciting to do that. I’d love to create a new one. Y’know, something that’s closer to what I get excited about.”

We reported back in November of last year that Sony was working on creating a Morbius the Living Vampire movie with Power Rangers writers Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. In fact, the writers had already finished the script and submitted it to Sony. Sharpless and Sazama are also the minds behind Netflix’s Lost in Space series which fans seem to link given it has a 75% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you are unfamiliar with Morbius the Living Vampire he was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane and first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #101. He was originally Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease. He was attempting to discover a cure for himself, but instead he turned himself into a vampire. He gained increased strength, fans, and a thirst for human blood. Since his creation he’s been part of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery for decades.

It doesn’t appear anything was finalized between Sony and Fuqua regarding the Morbius project. In fact, it’s more than likely he passed on the project given that he talked about Sony approaching him in the past tense.

However, it does appear he’s open to a comic book project. JoBlo’s Paul Shirey recommended he take on a potential Blade reboot. What comic book character would you like to see Fuqua put his touch on?
