One of the break out stars in Avengers: Infinity War is Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. Her character has evolved since we first got a glimpse of her character in the post-credit scene of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She made her big debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron acting as an antagonist turned hero when she realizes just exactly what Ultron has planned for Earth. She would then show up in Captain America: Civil War working alongside Captain America as they took down Crossbones in Africa. She would even join Captain America’s team in helping him and Bucky Barnes track down Helmut Zemo.

But her biggest role was definitely in this year’s Avengers: Infinity War where she shows off some true power in not only holding off Thanos, but destroying the Mind Stone in Vision’s head at the same time. She also poses a formidable threat to Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight and eventually kills Proxima Midnight.

And while Scarlet Witch’s star power has grown over the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Elizabeth Olsen isn’t too fond of the outfit she has to wear to become the character.

In an interview with Elle she talked about the costume:

“It would just not be a cleavage corset. I like corsets, but I’d like it to be higher. Everyone has these things that cover them—Tessa Thompson does, Scarlett does. I would like to cover up a bit. It’s funny because sometimes I look around and I’m just like—wow, I’m the only one who has cleavage, and that’s a constant joke because they haven’t really evolved my superhero costume that much. But then you look at where it started in the comic books and it was a leotard and a headband so…oh, it’s horrible, it’s so horrible. So at least they know that’s not cool. But then they made Wonder Woman, you know? And that’s what she’s in. I think of the costumes and what we have to wear—it’s more about iconic images, because that’s what these movies are…. I think that’s the goal with the costumes, and it’s not representing the average woman.”

Olsen is right, the original design for Scarlet Witch has a pretty awful looking headpiece. You take a look at what her design looked like back in The X-Men #4 from 1964.

Interestingly enough her costume would remain pretty consistent throughout the years. In the first issue of her 2016 ongoing series, Scarlet Witch still has the head piece, the red cape, and a red corset top. Although the head piece doesn’t wrap around her chin anymore!

Elizabeth Olsen’s costume has evolved in the three major movies she’s been apart of.

There’s a definite evolution between Age of Ultron and Civil War. They switched from a black dress that showed off part of her red bra to a red corset and black leggings. They also added a much longer red coat and removed the red jacket. The costume remained almost unchanged between Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. She still has the red corset and the black pants with the longer red coat.

And Olsen is right for the most part that most of the other female heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are pretty covered up in Avengers: Infinity War. Maybe the only one who has a similar costume to Olsen is Zoe Saldana’s Gamora.

What do you think about the costume design for Scarlet Witch? Does it show too much cleavage or do you think it honors the classic look from the comics?
