Marvel Writer Makes Racist “Joke” About White People

What is wrong with people and Twitter? It’s as if we cannot go a single day without someone making a complete donkey of themselves on the social media platform. Today’s special guest is Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man and Marvel 2-in-One writer Chip Zdarsky.

Chip decided to post this tweet this past Sunday.

I wish that incidents like this were isolated, but as we’ve previously seen it’s usually the beginning of a pattern. We’ve seen comic book creators like Gabby Rivera go off the deep end with her racism and even people like Michelle Perez wish death upon military veterans and comic book critics. However, Chip Zdarsky might be the biggest name yet in comics to make a racist “joke.” He’s actually a talented writer and his Marvel 2-in-One has been enjoyable.  However, I doubt he’s going to win over many customers with racist “jokes” like this.

It’s unsurprising to see Marvel’s comic book sales continue to decline when their “professional” writers are making jokes like this. There’s obviously still an audience for quality comic books as Richard Meyer, Jon Malin, and Brett R. Smith’s current IndieGoGo for their graphic novel Jawbreakers – Lost Souls has raised over $124,000 dollars from almost 3500 backers.

But the declining sales and stupid comments that chase away fans doesn’t seem to matter to Chip Zdarsky as long as he gets a pat on the head.

While others just chimed in on the “joke” with their own memes and gifs.

Of course, it didn’t take long before someone took a swing at the Republican Party. They implied they are an all-white party ignoring the fact that the first African American Senator, Hiram Revels, was actually a Republican from Mississippi. In fact, the first three African American Senators were Republicans.

And there were the now, predictable Trump references.

But as we all know, history isn’t the strong suit of the majority of people.

A writer for the Washinton Times, Douglas Ernst caught wind of the tweet and proposed a very good question.

To the first point Douglas makes, would it be ok if Chip were to look at the brown paint section and make that same remark? Why can’t Puerto Ricans like myself be a part of the joke too? Why is this a white only “club?” This subconscious assumption of lowered expectations continues to haunt not only my community but many others in the West.

We’re not treated as equals, at best we’re treated with kid gloves, at worst tokens.

The second point goes to Chip Zdarksy’s virtue signaling. Is there some sort of checkbox these people have to pencil in before they’re in the gang? Because it kinda feels that way.

Some on Twitter took note of Ernst’s second point with their own theories behind the asinine tweet.

A number of fans placed the blame of the racist “joke” Tweet not only on Zdarsky but Marvel Comics’ Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski claiming he doesn’t truly care about the fans because he allows this type of unprofessional behavior to continue. One made it very clear he wants Cebulski to once and for all, clean house at the publisher.

And as C.B. Cebulski has been attacked by these types of people, he might want to take heed.
