Lucasfilm Unveils Han Solo’s First Encounter with Lando Calrissian in New Clip

Lando Calrissian

Lucasfilm and Disney released a brand new clip from Solo: A Star Wars Story that shows the first encounter between Han Solo and Lando Calrissian. But not only is it the first encounter between the two lovable rogues, but it also makes canon the wildly popular Star Wars card game, Sabacc.

The encounter starts when Han Solo walks into a gambling a pit and sits down at Lando’s table to play a game of Sabacc. There’s some fun dialogue with Lando calling Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo, Han, with his iconic pronunciation that Billy Dee Williams perfected in The Empire Strikes Back. Han then says he has a heard a story about Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. Lando interrupts him before he can even hint at what the story is by telling him, “Everything you’ve heard about me is true.”

It’s a fun a little clip that shows the challenging and competitive nature between the two rogues. I like how they verbally spar with each other as each one sizes the others up. It’s a pretty good first meeting between two of the most popular characters in the Star Wars universe.

Along with the showing off Lando and Han’s first meeting, they also unveiled a clip showing Chewbacca playing Holochess with Woddy Harrelson’s Tobias Becket.

This is definitely a nostalgia scene that hearkens back to the original Star Wars where R2-D2 faces off against Chewbacca in holochess. While R2-D2 let Chewbacca win in A New Hope after Han Solo informed him that Wookies rip droids arms out if they lose, Tobias Beckett doesn’t have any advice from Han. He defeats Chewbacca in holochess. He then offers his own advice, “Hey, hey Chewie. Relax. Hey, try to compose yourself. Look, all you got to do is think a few moves ahead, anticipate your opponent. There’s a lesson to be learned here.” It’s unclear what happens next, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Chewbacca ends up ripping Beckett’s arm off.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25, 2019.
