Actor Nathan Fillion whose known for his roles as Richard Castle on Castle, Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds on Firefly, and Gary West on Santa Clarita Diet just revealed an Uncharted live-action fan film.

Watch it right here:

If you are unfamiliar with Uncharted, it’s a video game franchise created by Naughty Dog that stars Nathan “Nate” Drake, who is an Indiana Jones type character who goes on missions throughout the world discover rare and capture rare artifacts. The franchise launched with Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on PlayStation in 2007 and would see multiple sequels including Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. There’s been a prequel as well as a spin-off starring Chloe Frazer as the progatonist.

There’s even an Uncharted comic book that was released by DC Comics. It was written by Joshua Williamson with art by Sergio Sandoval and covers by Adam Hughes.

There’s long been talk of a film adaptation by producer Avi Arad. However, like Deadpool before it, it’s long been in development. In fact, back in 2009, the film had already been in development for a year and a half. Given the likeness of Nathan Drake to Nathan Fillion, the actor had expressed interest in taking on the role and even created a Twitter campaign to land the role after Sony announced David O. Russell would be the director on the film.

By 2011, Russell dropped out of the directing job and Columbia Pictures began looking for a new screenwriter. Russell was replaced by Neil Burger who would drop out a year later. Marianne and Cormac Wibberley were then brought in to rewrite the film. They wouldn’t last very long. There would be a number of rewrites and others brought in to get the project moving.

The most recent news saw writer Joe Carnahan post the script to the Uncharted film to his Instagram, confirming it had been completed.

However, it appears his script wouldn’t be used. ScreenRant reported the script was being rewritten by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. writer-producer Rafe Judkins.

While the official movie still remains in development. We do get to enjoy Nathan Fillion’s fan version which is absolutely excellent. If this fan film is a wild success do you think we could see Sony and Columbia Pictures finally move forward with their official Uncharted film and bring in Fillion to play Drake?
