It’s a great time to be a DC fan. Some of the comic publisher’s greatest characters are getting their own films. That’s not always exciting, but when you have names like Cathy Yan, James Wan, Jonathon Goldstein and John Francis Daley and Matt Reeves it’s okay to get a little excited. Now, another DC project could be coming to a theater near you, starring a certain Kryptonian. No, not that one. Kara Zor-El, Supergirl, is getting her very own movie from screenwriter Oren Uziel!

Deadline reports that Oren Uziel, the screenwriter behind [easyazon_link identifier=”B00KPYT3LS” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]22 Jump Street[/easyazon_link] and The Cloverfield Paradox, is working on a script for Supergirl. As of right now, that’s all they’ve uncovered about the project. There are no attached directors, producers or stars. Just Uziel.

It’s an interesting idea. First of all, Kara’s doing great right now. She’s had a few great comic series recently, and is currently starring in her own TV series! Melissa Benoist stars in the Greg Berlanti and the recently-ousted Andrew Kreisberg show, which originally aired on CBS and is now on The CW. Like every other “Arrowverse” show, it’s an entertaining take that’s more lighthearted than serious and action-packed. Perfect for TV.

Now, it looks like DC is interested in bringing Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, to the bigger screen.

Kara is an amazing character herself. A Kryptonian who is uniquely powerful, sometimes even more powerful than her cousin Kal El. Bringing her to the DC Extended Universe will be an interesting challenge and perspective. Not just for herself, but for our current Superman. While not trying to take away from the solo film’s potential, a Supergirl film could perfectly connect to any potential Man of Steel sequel.

The WB-animated feature [easyazon_link identifier=”B003ZJ03X2″ locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Batman/Superman: Apocalypse[/easyazon_link] included the famous “Supergirl of Krypton” storyline. The premise being that Batman is obviously wary of this new and powerful hero while Superman is protective of his new cousin. An interesting way to integrate Superman and possibly Batman into this Supergirl film, or to introduce the character in the next Superman film. It’ll be interesting to see who directs the movie. DC has officially opened the doors for talented female directors! Following in the incredible footsteps of Patty Jenkins and the highly-anticipated steps of Cathy Yan and Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey film.

As for the tone, fans should expect a mix of weird and lighthearted from screenwriter Oren Uziel. 22 Jump Street was a riot, and The Cloverfield Paradox was an entertaining, but mixed bag. Let’s hope he uses his unique blend of funny and strange to write a wonderful Supergirl film for audiences around the world.
