Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Gets an Official Name!

Sony’s Spider-Man universe which will make its true debut in the upcoming Venom film starring Tom Hardy has an official name.
Sony teamed up with Marvel Studios to introduce Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with [easyazon_link identifier=”B01F4BWXCC” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Captain America: Civil War[/easyazon_link] and then followed up his successful appearance in [easyazon_link identifier=”B073RW6NGL” locale=”US” tag=”boundingintocomics-20″]Spider-Man: Homecoming[/easyazon_link]. They are extending that relationship with Spider-Man sequel, Spider-Man: Far From Home. There are also plans for more Spider-Man affiliated characters to show-up in Marvel movies as well as Avengers possibly making cameos in Sony films.
In a report from Variety, they indicate their potential movie universe is internally called Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters or SUMC for short.
Sony hopes to see Venom jump out of the gate with success and then dive into a number of new projects such as the recently announced Morbius film with director Daniel Espinosa and Jared Leto attached. They are also working on a Kraven the Hunter film with writer Richard Wenk attached.
Other projects look to be part of Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters are movies based on Silk, Jackpot, and Nightwatch. However, they haven’t found writers for these films, but are actively searching. A report back in March indicated Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari could be penning the Nightwatch script with Spike Lee directing.
They are also scrapping their planned Silver & Black film which would have starred Black Cat a.k.a Felicia Hardy and Silver Sable a.k.a Silver Sablinova.
They believe Black Cat can stand on her own and will feature in her own film.
President of Columbia Pictures Sanford Panitch, who is overseeing Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters explains, “We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film.”
With the Silver & Black film getting scrapped it also means that writer and director Gina Prince-Blythewood could be leaving as well. Variety believes she “will likely depart the project.” However, she will remain as a producer for the upcoming Black Cat and Silver Sable solo films.
It’s no surprise that Silver & Black is getting scrapped. The film was dropped from Sony’s release schedule back in June.
Panitch emphasized this new Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters will embrace diversity, “We feel there’s no reason the Marvel characters shouldn’t be able to embrace diversity.” But he also said, “We’re focused on being faithful to the comics.”
