Disney Announces Live-Action Mulan Production Begins With Huge Cast Announcement Including Jet Li!

Disney just announced their live-action Mulan film has gone into production.

With the announcement they also revealed the film will shoot on location in New Zealand and China.

Disney also revealed a major casting announcement for the film. Liu Yifei from The Forbidden Kingdom and Once Upon A Time will play Hua Mulan. She will be joined by Donnie Yen from Star Wars: Rogue One, Jason Scott Lee from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Yoson An from The Meg, Utkarsh Ambudkar from Pitch Perfect, Ron Yuan from Marco Polo, Tzi Ma from Arrival, Rosalind Chao from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Cheng Pei-Pei from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Nelson Lee, and Chum Ehelepola.

The film will also star Gong Li from Memoirs of a Geisha and Jet Li from Lethal Weapon 4 and Shaolin Temple.

Along with the casting announcement, Disney also released a new synopsis for the film:

Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.”

The film will be directed by Niki Caro based off a screenplay from Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek. The film is based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”

Disney released their animated version of Mulan back in 1998. The film starred Ming-Na Wen, Miguel Ferrer, and Eddie Murphy. It was nominated for an Oscar and two Golden Globe awards.

Mulan is expected to open in U.S. theaters on March 27, 2020.
